Type 3 Diabetes: An Overview

Tuesday, January 28th (5:15 – 6:30 PM)

Could our lifestyle habits lead to the development of Type 3 Diabetes? In this interesting session, we will review the hypothesis that Alzheimer’s disease is actually caused by a form of insulin resistance in the brain. You will learn how high blood sugars can lead to decreased cognitive function as well as how dietary choices, physical activity patterns, and genetics are associated with brain health. Finally, strategies for decreasing the risk of Type 3 Diabetes will be presented.

Location: Magers Health & Wellness Center, Room 100

Presenter: Leah Brooke, RDN, LD; graduate assistant for Employee Wellness

Food and Sustainability

Available online!

Citizen Scholar Award recipient Stephanie Urich will present over an extremely relevant topic: how to support and cultivate a sustainable diet, both on a personal and societal level. In this session, you will learn how to protect and enhance natural resources, reduce food waste, and create a meal plan that is tasty and sustainable. You will also learn how to grow your own foods through the use of container gardens, kitchen gardens, and productive pets. Finally, Stephanie will overview resources we have right here in Southwest Missouri that support sustainable food production.

Presenter: Stephanie Urich, ddietetics and psychology student and 2019-2020 Citizen Scholar recipient

Personalized Nutrition

Can food affect our genes or how they are expressed? Should we follow diet recommendations based upon our specific DNA? Are the online companies that offer personalized nutrition credible? In this session, we will examine how nutrients like fats, proteins, vitamins, and phytochemicals influence DNA, regulate the expression of genes, and maintain the integrity of DNA. We will also overview the pros/cons of genetic testing, particularly as they relate to individualized food and supplement recommendations. Don’t let the big words intimidate you as this is a session you do NOT want to miss!

Presenters: Austin Sullivan, dietetics student; Daniela Novotny, DHSc, MS, RD/LD, CHES
