Nutrition Talks - Fall 2019

Are you interested in learning about the latest nutrition “hot” topics?  If so, you are in luck as we have some excellent Nutrition Talks planned for the Fall 2019 Semester! All Nutrition Talks are presented by registered dietitians and/or faculty members in Biomedical Sciences. Additionally, due to our love of food, a healthy meal will be served at each session!

Wait… What’s for Dinner?? An Update on Meat Substitutes – Tuesday, Aug 27th  (5:15 – 6:30 PM)

The Impossible Burger.  The Beyond Burger.  Clean meat.  You have heard of these products, but what are they really?  And, are they healthy?  In this session, you will learn why meat substitutes are increasing in popularity, the ingredients and nutrients found in popular products, and how advancements in food science technology are affecting the food industry.  Plus, you will get to taste a few of these products!

Popular Diets 101 – Tuesday, September 17th (5:15 – 6:30 PM)

Of the diets out there, some of the most googled include the Paleo Diet, Whole 30, and the DASH Diet.  In this Nutrition Talk, you will learn about each of these diets, including the nutritional recommendations of the diet, the pros/cons of each plan, and the research regarding the diet and health outcomes.  Bring your questions, as we will have enough time to also discuss other diets/programs!

Spotlight on Cannabidiol –  Tuesday, October 8th (5:15 – 6:30 PM)

Cannabidiol (CBD) has taken the market by storm the past few years; one recent survey suggests that over 55 million adults use CBD for health-related reasons!  In this session, you will learn about the history of CBD, its potential benefits for certain conditions, why its use remains controversial to some professionals, and how to decipher a quality product from a quack product .

An Innovative Treatment for IBS: The Low-FODMAP Diet –  Tuesday, Nov 19th (5:15 – 6:30 PM)

Few truly effective medical treatments for IBS exist.  However, one diet therapy has received a lot of interest and press recently; evidence-based research suggests that diets low in fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAPs) may significantly improve GI symptoms.  In this session, you will learn about the low-FODMAP diet and whether or not the diet may be suitable for you.  You will also receive contact information for dietitians trained in the low FODMAP diet.
