Recycling Proposal
It may be difficult to believe, but before 2011, MSU did not have recycling! Recycling started at MSU when two students submitted a proposal to fund student recycling workers who would be in charge of taking out recycling from newly funded recycling bins. To this day, the recycling program is funded by the Sustainability Fund and run primarily by student workers. Since then, numerous recycling proposals have been funded, such as outdoor and indoor bins funded in 2012, glass recycling in 2014, and increased wages in 2024. For more information on recycling on campus, please visit the Recycling FAQs page.

Hydration Stations
Starting in 2011, numerous proposals have been submitted to construct water bottle fillers, or hydration stations, on campus. The aim of these proposals is to encourage the use of reusable water bottles to reduce plastic waste and improve the student experience on campus. Over 40 hydration stations have been built across campus through the Sustainability Fund, and more continue to be built today.

Campus Garden Proposal
In 2011, some passionate students turned their dream of a Campus Community Garden into a reality. The goal of this proposal was to lay the foundation for a successful, small scale organic garden on the Missouri State University Springfield campus. Since then, numerous other proposals have supported the growth of the garden, including funding for paid campus garden workers, storage facilities, a compost system, accessibility upgrades, and more! Today, this student managed project has serves as a source of locally grown produce, education and community building for the campus community, with all produce being donated to the Bear Pantry. For more information, visit the Campus Garden page.

LED Light Replacements
Many proposals have been made to retrofit buildings with LED Lighting. LED lights make areas more well-lit and safe while using significantly less energy than traditional lighting and having lower maintenance costs than the alternatives. Retrofits have been funded by the Sustainability Fund in areas like parking lots, sports fields, and along sidewalks, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars for the university while improving campus safety.

Solar Stop
Located in front of Meyer Library, the Solar Stop is a solar bike shelter funded by the Sustainability Fund to provide weather protection for bikes while generating electricity for the campus. This project both encourages sustainable transportation while providing energy savings for the university.
