Brightspace Gradebook
The gradebook contains your grading system, grade calculations, grade scheme, grade items, and view and display options. Grade items in your grade book represent all the work that you want to evaluate users on in a course. You can evaluate specific tasks such as assignments, tests, and participation, and you can also create grade items and associate them with course objects such as assignments and quizzes.
Take a visual tour of the Grades tool.
As you plan your grade book, consider:
- Which grade items you plan to evaluate.
- Which grading system is most appropriate for your course.
- How you will allocate points or weights across grade items.
- How you want to calculate final grades.
It is recommended to run the Setup Wizard before importing content or creating assignments in Brightspace. If the Setup Wizard is not completed, students will not be able to see the Total Points column for the course. If you’ve already added assessments, you can still run the Setup Wizard; however, you may need to manually release the final grade column afterward.
Resources:
Setting Up Your Gradebook with the Setup Wizard: Run the Setup Wizard to guide you through the initial gradebook configuration. If a gradebook has not yet been set up for your course, the Grades Setup Wizard page will appear automatically the first time you access the Grades tool.
Things to note:
- On page 2 when it asks you about releasing the grade column, it is recommended to use the Calculated Final Grade option. You will also want to make sure to check all boxes related to releasing the final grade.
- Once you have run the Setup Wizard, verify that the Calculated Total Points column is visible to your students. If you see the "eye" icon it is visible. If the "eye" icon has a line through it, it is not visible. In this situation you will need to manually release the Final Calculated Column.
Creating Grade Categories and Items: Grade categories provide a way to sort your grade items and create restrictions and conditions for grade items. They offer a way to sort and characterize learner activities like assignments and quizzes.
Manage Grades in the Grades Tool: The Manage Grades tab enables you to create and edit grade items and grade categories, reorder your gradebook, and more.
Enter Grades in the Grades Tool: Use the Enter Grades tab to easily view all learner grades, grade categories and grade items. From this tab, Instructors can assess and evaluate grades, as well as import and export gradebooks.
Grade with QuickEval: Quick Eval offers evaluators a single location to view all learner submissions, including assignments, quizzes, and discussions, and offers robust filtering and sorting capabilities to easily access and grade all submissions.
