What is the University Symphony Orchestra about?
We promote MSU's Public Affairs Mission through music making. Being a full-sized symphony orchestra with woodwinds, brass, percussion, and string players, we practice empathy when we consider the needs of other members. We perform at the highest level possible to communicate emotions that are relatable to people of all backgrounds. We love collaborating with organizations within the university and the greater Springfield community, including the Burrell Behavioral Health Autism Center to help host our annual Sensory-Friendly Concert.
Are all members music majors?
No! Our membership comes from every walk of life on campus. Experienced musicians majoring in and outside of music are able to pursue their love of music and find community here.
How do I join the University Symphony Orchestra?
Sign up for an audition and find information at the Concert Ensemble Audition page. To join in the fall, you can sign up between Aug. 1-15. For the spring semester, please contact Dr. Yi-Pin Chen to schedule an appointment prior to the semester start.
What is the time commitment for University Symphony Orchestra?
The orchestra meets twice weekly from 3-4:50 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. We perform six concerts a year, including the annual collaboration with MSU's Grand Chorus at our President's Concert.
Is orchestra a class?
Yes. Orchestra is a class for which each participating student must register under
MUS 176, 376, or 776. Students receive academic credit for the class, which can be
used to fill elective credits in many degree programs.
