String Fling returns July 11-14, 2021.

Early-bird application period ends May 21!

String Fling is a chamber music/orchestra experience for pre-college string students. Marking its 19th year, String Fling returns in 2021 with high school and middle school camps. Students in private lessons who have completed grade six or higher are invited to study this summer on the Missouri State University campus (Springfield, Missouri).

Faculty

Students will be coached by full-time faculty of Missouri State University's Department of Music, including Dr. David Hays (violin), Daniel Ketter (cello), Dr. Amy Muchnick (viola), Dr. Christopher Kelts (orchestra), Samantha Silver and other guest faculty. Convocations, master classes, presentations and and other events combine to make String Fling an unforgettable experience.

Housing and Meals

Campers choosing the residential option live on campus in a University residence hall for the duration of the program; they are served three meals daily at one of the residential dining halls. A staff of counselors supervise residential life. All camp students are supervised at all times. The high school commuter option includes paid lunch and dinner Monday through Wednesday; the Silver Strings commuter option includes a paid lunch Monday through Wednesday.

HIGH SCHOOL
String Fling Chamber Camp

July 11-14, 2021

The High School camp is a chamber music experience! Participants range from completed 9th thru completed 12th grade and are placed in small ensembles, according to their respective abilities, to work with coaches and perform in master classes, culminating in a performance.

Daily Schedule

This camp runs Sunday, July 11 thru Wednesday, July 14, 2021. More detailed schedule information will be mailed to campers with sheet music.

(Sunday) July 11:
  • Afternoon arrival to Missouri State campus
  • Introductions and initial rehearsals
(Monday - Wednesday) July 12-14:
  • 8:30 a.m. — Student drop-off, breakfast, and personal practice time
  • 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. — Rehearsals / Lunch / Assembly / Masterclass
  • 5 - 8 p.m. — Dinner / Evening Activites / Orchestra
  • 8 p.m. — Student pickup
  • Wednesday:
    • 6 p.m. — Concert

Students interested in attending should apply during the discounted early bird application period that ends May21, 2021. The final application deadline is June 6, 2021.

  1. Complete the online application and fee.
  2. Prepare and publish an audition video:
    • Keep video brief, no longer than 3 minutes.
    • No accompanist is required.
    • Publish audition video as an unlisted video on your YouTube or Vimeo channel.
  3. Email a link to your audition video to StringFling@MissouriState.edu. Please include your full name as it was submitted on the application.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition includes a $25 non-refundable application fee. Applicants not accepted for any reason will have all fees refunded except for the $25 application fee.

Residential
  • $475 ($490 for single room, if available). Apply by May 21 for an early-bird discount of $100.
Commuter
  • $385. Apply by May 21 for an early-bird discount of $100.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
Silver Strings Orchestra Camp

July 12-14, 2021

The Silver Strings Middle School camp is open to students who have completed 6th, 7th, or 8th grade. Participants will gain a fun and educating orchestral experience culminating in a performance. ALL camp students will be supervised by resident assistants and have supervision at all times.

Daily Schedule

This camp runs Monday, July 12, through Wednesday, July 14, 2021. A detailed schedule will be mailed to campers with sheet music.

(Monday - Wednesday) July 12-14:
  • 8:30 a.m. — Student drop-off, check-in; warm-up time
  • 9 a.m. — Orchestra rehearsal
  • 11 a.m. — Activity/lunch
  • 1 p.m. — Orchestra rehearsal
  • 3 p.m. — Afternoon activity
  • 4 p.m. — Sectionals/presentations
  • 5 p.m. — Student pick-up
  • Wednesday:
    • 6 p.m. — Concert
