Biography
Jeremiah Rupp is a double bassist and educator based in Springfield, Mo. He currently serves as Assistant Principal Bass of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and performs regularly with the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas (SONA) and Tulsa Symphony. He is also an Affiliate Artist with Ozark Lyric Opera. His previous orchestral engagements include performances with the OKC Philharmonic, Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra, Fort Smith Symphony, and he was a Double Bass Fellow with the Opera Festival of Chicago.
Rupp began his collegiate studies at Oklahoma City University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music in Performance while studying with Dr. John Schimek. He continued his studies at Southern Methodist University with Brian Perry, earning both a Master of Music in Performance and a Master of Music in Musicology with an Emphasis in Pedagogy. He later attended Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts, where he studied with Jon McCollough-Benner and earned a Performance Diploma in Orchestral Studies.
As a student, Rupp attended the Sewanee Summer Music Festival, where he studied with Sidney King. He has also performed in masterclasses for Chicago Symphony Orchestra Principal Bass Alexander Hanna and Paul Unger, Assistant Principal Bass of the Fort Worth Symphony.
In addition, Rupp has performed chamber music in Dallas with current and former members of the Escher String Quartet, principal players of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and the Viano String Quartet. His interests as a performer are complemented by his work in musicology. He presented the Dallas Chamber Music Society pre-concert lecture “Korngold, Zemlinsky, and Brahms: Music in Film,” and his research interests include twentieth-century reception history, the values and cultural forces involved in the formulation of the “middlebrow,” and the use of digital humanities techniques in musicological research.
As a teacher, Rupp emphasizes artistic freedom through technical development. Drawing from the traditions of the Prague School of double bass playing, he seeks to provide students with a strong and reliable technical foundation from which individual musical expression can develop. His teaching places particular importance on understanding how technique, preparation, and musical decision-making work together, with the goal of helping students become increasingly independent, confident, and expressive musicians.
