Police Engagement And College Empowerment

The PEACE Program is a partnership between the Springfield Police Department, Missouri State University, and the Office of Student Engagement designed to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the MSU student community, including fraternity and sorority members.

Through education, conversation, and community engagement, PEACE helps students better understand local ordinances, interact confidently and respectfully with law enforcement, and make informed decisions as members of the Springfield community.

Education Before Enforcement

A central goal of PEACE is proactive education. Springfield Police officers work to help students understand common situations that can lead to citations or other law-enforcement interactions before they become problems.

Topics highlighted through the program include:

  • Noise and parties — understanding Springfield's peace disturbance and prohibited-noise ordinances.
  • Alcohol — laws related to minors possessing alcohol and the possession, sale, or consumption of alcoholic beverages in public places.
  • Interacting with officers — understanding expectations related to identification and cooperating with lawful police activity.
  • Community responsibility — encouraging students to be considerate neighbors and positive members of the Springfield community.

What Students Should Know

PEACE emphasizes communication and problem-solving whenever circumstances allow. Officers may use warnings and education when responding to concerns; however, serious disturbances or other circumstances may require enforcement action.

Students and chapters are encouraged to address concerns proactively rather than waiting until an issue occurs. Building relationships and asking questions ahead of time can help create safer events, stronger neighborhoods, and better interactions between students and law enforcement.
