Missouri State's 2026 archaeological field school will take place about 20 miles from Springfield at the Phenix town site, where the Phenix Marble Company built a company town to house quarry workers and their families in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Students will excavate in areas associated with worker houses, a communal social hall, and trash disposal. We will also survey previously unexplored parts of the property to search for additional evidence of historic and pre-European activity in the area. The field school is part of a larger archaeological study of daily life in working class households and communities during a period of major social, economic and environmental change in the late 19th and early 20th century Ozarks.
