>> If you're an incoming graduate student, switch to graduate process.

Becoming a music major or minor is a multi-step process

Apply to Missouri State University and complete the music department audition process:

  1. Apply to Missouri State University.

  2. Choose your intended music major or minor.

  3. Review your audition requirements.

  4. Schedule an in-person audition or request video audition instructions.

  5. Complete your audition before your Student Orientation, Advisement and Registration (SOAR) session when possible.

  6. Wait for acceptance/studio placement.

The audition with the area faculty is for acceptance as a music major, placement into an applied studio, and consideration for any area scholarships that might be available. The audition with the ensemble director(s) is for acceptance into one or more ensembles and consideration for talent awards and/or band grants.

  7. Complete the Music Theory Entrance Exam.

  8. Attend SOAR and register for the correct first-semester courses.

Becoming a graduate music student is a multi-step process

Choose your graduate music program, apply to Missouri State University, complete any music department admission or audition requirements, and work with your advisor to review transfer credit if applicable:

  1. Choose your graduate music program or certificate.
Review the available graduate degrees, concentrations and certificates to find the program that matches your goals.

  2. Review Graduate College admission requirements.
Graduate students must meet Missouri State University Graduate College admission standards before being admitted to a graduate program.

  3. Review music department graduate admission and audition requirements.
Music graduate programs may have additional requirements, including auditions, submitted materials or placement exams.

  4. Apply to Missouri State graduate studies.
Submit your graduate application through Missouri State’s graduate admission process.

  5. Submit official transcripts from each college or university attended.
Transcripts are required so the university and department can verify previous coursework and degrees earned.

  6. Submit required graduate audition materials, schedule an in-person audition, or request video audition instructions, if required. Audition requirements vary by concentration, so review your program’s expectations before submitting materials.

  7. Review scholarship and graduate assistantship.
Audition requirements vary by concentration, so review your program’s expectations before submitting materials.

  8. Request review of previous graduate credit, if applicable.
Previous graduate coursework is not automatically applied and must be reviewed for possible transfer credit.

  9. Meet with the graduate program coordinator and register for courses.
The graduate coordinator can help confirm your degree plan, placement requirements and first-semester schedule.
