Short Term Disability (STD)

Short-term disability, often called income replacement or paycheck insurance, provides benefits to replace part of your income if you can’t work due to illness or an off-the-job injury.

Services covered

Participants who are unable to work due to illness, an off-the-job injury, or the birth of a child may submit a claim under the Short-Term Disability (STD) plan. Select coverage based on a specific weekly benefit amount up to 60% of their salary, with a maximum of $2,000 per week. Medical documentation supporting the need for leave must be provided to the STD carrier.

Once approved, benefits are paid directly to the employee.

Why consider short-term disability coverage?

If you couldn’t work due to illness or injury, would you be able to cover your living expenses and medical bills? For most people, the answer is no. Short-term disability helps protect a portion of your income during this time.

Although the University provides sick leave, vacation, and other paid time off, many employees don’t have enough saved to cover a prolonged medically necessary absence. The short-term disability plan doesn’t offset other income, making it an affordable way to maintain financial security.

Unlike workers’ compensation, short-term disability covers non-work-related injuries and illnesses.

Enrolling and changing

This coverage is voluntary and complements your other insurance—it is not a substitute for health insurance.

You must enroll in short-term disability during your new hire period, within 31 days of a qualifying event, or during open enrollment. Covered services apply only after your effective date, and pre-existing condition limitations may apply.
