Long-term Disability Insurance
Cost and coverage
The University provides long-term disability coverage at no cost to full-time, benefit-eligible employees.
Coverage pays the lesser of 60% of your monthly covered earnings (rounded to the nearest dollar) or $10,000 per month, after a disability period of at least 180 days.
Benefits are calculated based on your gross disability amount, offset by other income benefits and a return-to-work incentive. Monthly benefits assume a 30-day month and are prorated if payable for less than a full month.
Disability is defined as:
-
Being unable to perform the material and substantial duties of your regular occupation; and
-
Earning less than 80% of your indexed income from working in your regular occupation.
See plan details for disability definitions beyond 36 months, as well as limitations, exclusions, and payment limits.
How to use the benefit
If you’re unable to work due to an accident or illness, you must file a leave with the University. The Human Resources Benefits team is available to assist you. If your leave is expected to last longer than 180 days, you will need to file a claim with the insurance carrier.
