Food Insecurity: Nourishing and Empowering their Holistic Needs in Chicago, IL

On this trip to Chicago, you will not only be immersed in the culture of the windy city but also truly connect to the diverse community of people. While working with nonprofit organizations in Chicago, we will encounter people who face food insecurity, homelessness, and health issues and we will work to expand our knowledge of how these issues connect back to the Springfield community. People who experience food insecurity come from all walks of life, which in many cases is experienced by people we interact with daily. This trip provides the opportunity for international and domestic students to work closely with several food pantries and shelters to curb food insecurity and empower the community’s holistic needs. This experience will also allow us to broaden our knowledge of community engagement through daily reflections on our experiences with this impactful opportunity. Now is your chance to help nourish and empower these communities today to secure a better world tomorrow. We will be working with the St James Catholic Church’s Food Pantry, packing, parceling and assisting in the preparation of the food pantry. We will also visit the Greater Chicago Food Depository and an additional shelter within the area to get a different perspective on how we can serve our community

Supporting Children in Foster Care & the Organizations Behind Them in Memphis, TN

As of 2020, the state of Tennessee had over 9,000 children in the foster care system. Of those children, over 1,000 of them are located within Shelby County (Memphis). These foster children are often pulled from their homes very quickly, leaving them scared and lonely. On this trip, we will be partnering with two non-profits in Memphis who work directly with foster children to provide them with a safe place to wait for placement, clean clothes, food to eat, and loving adults to support them. Each night, we will end with a time of reflection as a group to discuss our experiences. We'll also get the chance to explore the city of Memphis together!
