How does the Ursa Experience differ from SOAR?

Both Student Orientation, Advisement and Registration (SOAR) and the Ursa Experience are important programs that help first-year students successfully transition to Missouri State University.

All new students with fewer than 24 transferrable credit hours earned after their high school graduation are required to attend SOAR. At SOAR, students learn about opportunities for engagement both in and out of the classroom and work with an academic advisor to enroll in their first semester of classes. Student will leave SOAR confident in their academic plans and ready to begin life as a Missouri State Bear.

The Ursa Experience is an optional off-campus experience open to new first-year and transfer students admitted for fall semesters. It is an event similar to a summer camp, but designed to help new students adapt to college life. Students will build strong bonds with peers, learn traditions, and explore personal strengths. With obstacle courses, team chants, and campfires, this adventure experience emphasizes having fun and building social connections so that first-year students gain the confidence and support they need to be successful the minute they begin classes.

Registration fee

The $100 non-refundable registration fee covers a student’s entire cost for the Ursa Experience. We secure facilities and purchase supplies and materials in advance to ensure we can offer students the lowest price possible; therefore, we are unable to offer any refunds.

The registration fee includes:

  • Overnight lodging in an air-conditioned, bunk-bed style sleeping quarters with indoor plumbing
  • Meals, snacks, and drinks during the camp experience
  • Transportation to and from the site
  • A nationally recognized personality assessment that highlights students’ individual strengths
  • Connection to established Missouri State student leaders and staff
  • Missouri State University giveaways
  • A unique Ursa Experience t-shirt
  • A group photo and spirit team photo
  • All site amenities

Is financial assistance available?

Yes! Thanks to the generosity of the Missouri State community, a limited amount of financial assistance is available to students who wish to attend the Ursa Experience but find the cost prohibitive.

To apply, please submit an Application for Financial Assistance located on the Forms page. Due to limits on the number of Ursa Experience participants and the amount of financial assistance available, we recommend students seeking financial assistance apply as soon as possible to have the best chance of attending.

For more information on how to apply, please contact New Student and Family Programs at 417-836-3060.
