Community Outreach

Make the community your classroom

You have a training ground for patient interaction and care.

We have so many partnerships where you can help those with medical needs.

Discover the value of community, gain experience and build your confidence.

Partnerships

A preceptor (teacher/instructor) in the community supervises your partnership role.

Assist a school nurse

Work with a school nurse in a local school district.

Do health assessments and screenings for health issues with students in grades K-12.

Teach good habits, assist in health education and learn new management skills.

Our students and faculty also give screenings in school districts that do not have a nurse on staff.

Camp Barnabas

You can complete your pediatric rotation by spending one week of your second summer of nursing school at Camp Barnabas. Help children of various ages and abilities.

A faculty member oversees every clinical rotational group. You’ll have one-on-one attention as you help campers have a great time.

Coalition of Health Communities

Host nursing wellness clinics on a weekly basis. Help at-risk populations within the Springfield area.

Current collaborations include:

  • Victory Mission
  • Harmony House
  • The Kitchen, Inc.
  • Isabel's House
  • Catholic Charities Ministries
  • The Salvation Army

You’ll work weekly at the site and meet your clients’ health care needs. These sites have no nursing or health care services available on a regular basis.

Do assessments, give referrals and provide education.

You’ll build trust with a client base who often experience poor health care delivery.

The Kitchen, Inc

Give health screenings, teach good health habits and assist in medical referrals. Work with individuals of all ages and those with many different needs.

MSU Care

Take part in clinical rotations and treat patients who do not otherwise have access to quality medical care.

With supervision from faculty in the school, you’ll work with a variety of patients in a dynamic environment.

MSU Care is a partnership between MSU and Mercy Hospital-Springfield.
