Program Requirements
If you are pursuing a degree in religious studies, you must meet the requirements listed below to be eligible for graduation.
You can pursue religious studies as either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree. Consult your advisor to determine which program is best for you.
Religious Studies (Non-Comprehensive) (BS)
Bachelor of Science
Major requirements (39 hours):
Note: Six hours may double count toward General Education.
- REL 100(3), 101(3), 102(3), 110(3), 131(3), 580(3).
- 18 hours from the following four areas, distributed so that there will be at least
three hours in each of the areas at the 300-level or higher*. Students pursuing a
second major may be eligible to apply up to six credit hours taken in the second major
towards requirements for the Religious Studies major, with advisor and department
head approval.
- Religions of Asia: REL 355(3), 357(3), 358(3), 360(3), 540(3)**.
- Biblical Studies: REL 312(3), 319(3), 320(3), 321(3), 322(3), 323(3), 325(3), 327(3), 362(3), 510(3)**, 570(3)**.
- Religions of Europe and the Middle East: REL 330(3), 338(3), 340(3), 341(3), 342(3), 350(3), 353(3), 550(1-3)**.
- Religion and Culture: REL 200(1), 315(3), 332(3), 344(3), 345(3), 346(3), 347(3), 348(3), 368(3), 370(3), 375(3), 378(3), 530(3)**; REL 390(3) or SOC 390(3) or PSY 533(3)**.
*Variable content courses (REL 397, 399, 499) may be counted where appropriate with the approval of the advisor and department head. A maximum of three hours of REL 499 may be applied to the major.
- Three additional hours of 500-level coursework: REL 510(3)**, 530(3)**, 540(3)**, 550(3)**, 570(3)**; PSY 533(3)**.
**Courses may not be used to satisfy more than one requirement within the major. - Public Affairs Capstone Experience will be fulfilled by completion of REL 580(3).
