Panhellenic Recruitment

Panhellenic recruitment offers an opportunity to meet chapter members and peers, while learning what each sorority has to offer.  Participating in the recruitment process does not require a person to join a chapter, but enables her to explore and learn more about the campus and Fraternity and Sorority community.  Recruitment is also a great way to meet new people and find out about different ways to get involved on campus.  This process is intended to be a positive, fun, and enriching experience for everyone who participates. Throughout the process, Recruitment Counselors (Pi Chi's) will answer all questions that may arise while participating in recruitment.

Letter from the Panhellenic Vice President of Recruitment

On behalf of the Panhellenic Association, I would like to welcome you to Missouri State University and express how excited I am to see your interest in joining our Fraternity and Sorority Life community! Fraternity and Sorority Life provides you with leadership skills, academic balance, networking resources, and life-long friendships. I couldn’t possibly list all of the benefits that members of our community have found—the opportunities offered are truly endless and each person’s experience is so special and unique. It is my hope that each of you find these opportunities within our community, just as I did when I went through recruitment.

Because each sorority within the Panhellenic community holds shared values, as well as values unique to their sisterhood, recruitment is a great time to reflect on your personal values. College is a key time in your life when you can understand who you are and discover what you want to be, and each of our sororities can help you to do so. You will find women who share and express your same interests and goals, as well as a support system that cares about your growth. When coming to campus in the Fall, and when going through recruitment, I encourage you to focus on what is important to you and what you truly seek out of your university experience. In doing so, I’m confident you will find the sorority that is right for you and, ultimately, a new place call home.

Although the formal recruitment process can be quite overwhelming, I promise it is worth it! The most important things to remember going into it are to enjoy each day, have fun, and be yourself.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns regarding the recruitment process. I can’t wait to see you in the fall, and, again, welcome to Missouri State University!

Values Based Recruitment

The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) and its 26 member sororities are values-based organizations. This means that their purposes and missions are rooted in a set of core values. Missouri State University's individual chapters and Panhellenic women ensure that recruitment events are values-based and reflective of the NPC sorority experience.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY VALUES?

The Josephson Institute for Ethics says values are the core beliefs or desires that guide or motivate attitudes and actions. Values are central beliefs that determine how we will behave in certain situations. Potential New Members should make recruitment choices based on their personal values.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF VALUES-BASED RECRUITMENT?
  • To ensure the future of chapters
  • To make connections and build relationships between chapter members and potential new members (PNMs)
  • To discover shared interests and values among chapter members and PNMs
  • To display the high standards held by all NPC member organizations
HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR A VALUES-BASED RECRUITMENT?
  • To become more aware of your personal values, consider taking an online quiz made to help you identify which are most important to you.
  • Do some research on each sororities’ core values and see how they fit in to your own

Panhellenic Counselors (Pi Chis)

Recruitment is an exciting and memorable experience, but it can be a hectic and emotional time as well. Recruitment counselors, referred to as Pi Chi's, are undergraduate women representing the various sororities at Missouri State. They have become disaffiliated from their chapters for the week of Recruitment to help you through the process! In addition to having participated in Recruitment as a potential new member and as a member of their chapter, these women have been through extensive training in preparation for this week.

They are available for you 24 hours a day as impartial listeners, guides, and friends. Get to know your Pi Chi because they want to get to know you and help you have the best recruitment experience that you can! You will meet your Pi Chi for the first time at PNM Orientation during the first week of classes. You will also have the opportunity to meet with her each day of Recruitment. These women are excited to help you find your home!

DAY 1A & 1B: HOUSE TOURS

THURSDAY, AUGUST 24th & FRIDAY, AUGUST 25th

WHAT TO EXPECT: The first "Day" of Recruitment is split up into Thursday (Day 1 A) and Friday (Day 1 B). On these two days, you will get the opportunity to visit all 8 sororities with a group of potential new members for house tours and conversation. You will be greeted at each chapter with door chants or songs as you are welcomed into the event! Each party is 20 minutes long, and you will likely visit some houses on Thursday and the rest on Friday. At the end of Day 1 A&B, you will select the 5 chapters you would like to return to on Day 2.

WHAT YOU'LL TALK ABOUT: Your first visit to each house is a great time to ask the women that you talk to questions about their sorority and tell them a little about yourself. Most importantly, don't stress and have fun!

WHAT YOU'LL WEAR: On Day 1 A&B, you will be provided with a t-shirt! You will wear this shirt for both days, but you may wear whatever else you will be most comfortable in--and we really mean comfortable, since you will be doing a lot of walking! Many potential new members decide to wear cute shorts or a causal skirt with their t-shirt. For shoes, many wear sandals or cute sneakers. Remember to wear what will be most comfortable for you, and what makes you feel most like yourself!

DAY 2: SISTERHOOD & PHILANTHROPY DAY

SATURDAY, AUGUST 26th

WHAT TO EXPECT: Day 2 is Philanthropy and Sisterhood Day. During this round, you will have the opportunity to talk with the 5 chapters you are invited to regarding their sisterhood and philanthropic efforts, while gaining a deeper understanding of their values. Again, you will be greeted at the houses with door chants or songs. You will also get to see a video in each house that shows how the chapters live out their values and what they do to support their philanthropies, as well as some of the fun things they do throughout the year! At the end of Day 2, you will select the top three houses that you would like to visit again for Day 3.

WHAT YOU'LL TALK ABOUT: This is the time to ask any questions you may have about each chapters' philanthropy, sisterhood, and anything else you may be wondering before making your decision for Preference Day. Picture yourself as a sister of the organizations you are visiting and try to decide where your best fit might be.

WHAT YOU'LL WEAR: On Day 2, you will be provided with another t-shirt! As with Day 1 A&B, you may wear anything else that makes you feel most like you. Just remember that you will be standing and walking a lot, so make sure that you will be comfortable!

DAY 3: PREFERENCE DAY

SUNDAY, AUGUST 27th

WHAT TO EXPECT: The final day of Recruitment is Preference Day. During this round, you will have the opportunity to visit up to two chapters before making your final selection. This is an important day not only for you, but for the chapters also, as you will experience a ceremony that reflects their ritual.  At the end of Day 3, you will rank your top houses in preparation for Bid Day!

WHAT YOU'LL TALK ABOUT: This will be a special day, therefore your conversations will likely be more deep and meaningful. Still feel free to ask questions and get to know the women better, while picturing yourself being a part of their sorority.

WHAT YOU'LL WEAR: This is the dressiest round of Recruitment. A formal dress is most common but you may also wear dress pants or a skirt with a blouse. Remember to stay classy with appropriate hemlines and necklines. When deciding on what to wear, think about something that would be appropriate and tasteful for a wedding or church. Remember that you will be walking across campus, so wear shoes that you will be able to walk in comfortably. Heels are great but don't feel like you must risk aching feet, sandals or flats are perfectly fine too!
