Closing the Gap: Proactive Advising Cohort 1, Retention over 9 semesters

This table provides data on three groups of first-generation students from fall 2017.

The title of the first column in the table is First-Generation Student Groups. The groups listed in this column are: RCOAL Proactive Advising Cohort (N=106), MSU First-Gen Students (N=1109) and RCOAL First-Gen Non-Participants (N=27). There are also two rows in this column that are labeled Proactive Difference and Proactive Difference Within College.

The remaining eight columns look at retention by particular semester as follows: Semester 2, Spring 2018; Semester 3, Fall 2018; Semester 4, Spring 2019; Semester 5, Fall 2019; Semester 6, Spring 2020; Semester 7, Fall 2020; Semester 8, Spring 2021; and Semester 9, Fall 2021.

Retention by Semester data by First-Generation Student Groups

Retention by semester data for the RCOAL Proactive Advising Cohort (N=106):

Semester 2 = 92%, Semester 3 = 79%, Semester 4 = 68%, Semester 5 = 65%, Semester 6 = 59%, Semester 7 = 59%, Semester 8 = 57%, and Semester 9 = 53%.

Retention by semester data for MSU First-Gen Students (N=1109):

Semester 2 = 92%, Semester 3 = 71%, Semester 4 = 63%, Semester 5 = 57%, Semester 6 = 55%, Semester 7 = 53%, Semester 8 = 50%, and Semester 9 = 50%.

Retention by semester data for RCOAL First-Gen Non-Participants (N=27):

Semester 2 = 78%, Semester 3 = no data, Semester 4 = no data, Semester 5 = 39%, Semester 6 = 37%, Semester 7 = 37%, Semester 8 = 33%, Semester 9 = 37%.

Difference between RCOAL Proactive Advising Cohort and MSU First-Gen Students:

For semester 2, the retention for both groups is the same; for semester 3, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 8% higher than the retention for MSU first-generation students; for semester 4, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 5% higher; for semester 5, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 8% higher; for semester 6, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 4% higher; for semester 7, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 6% higher; for semester 8, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 7% higher; and for semester 9, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 3% higher.

Difference within College between Proactive Advising Cohort and First-Gen Non-Participants:

For semester 2, the retention in the RCOAL proactive advising cohort is 14% higher than the retention for the RCOAL first-generation non-participants; for semester 5, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 26% higher; for semester 6, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 22% higher; for semester 7, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 22% higher; for semester 8, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 24% higher; and for semester 9, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 16% higher.
