Department of English Scholarships

Contact the department at 417-836-5107 for scholarship application guidelines deadline information. Scholarship amounts may vary annually. Students must be undergraduates, enrolled full-time (12 hours) unless otherwise noted.

William Bedford Memorial Scholarship
Student must be an entering freshman with a preference being given to students from Howell County, Missouri. Consideration given to high school performance, college potential, and leadership qualities. 

George and Martha Bixler First Generation Scholarship*
Student must be pursuing a B.S. Education Degree in English. First priority will be given to students whose parents did not graduate from college and who can demonstrate financial need. Student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 and a 3.0 in English Education.

Tammy M. Gardner Memorial Travel Award
Student must be a graduate student in English. The award will be made annually to support travel to a state or national conference where the student is presenting a scholarly paper.

George Gleason Scholarship*
Student must be an English major at the sophomore level or higher with an overall GPA of at least 3.0.

George Gleason & Elizabeth Mills Scholarship*
Student must be an English major. When awarded to an incoming freshman, consideration will be given to high school performance, college potential and leadership qualities. When awarded to a student enrolled at the sophomore level or higher, the student must have maintained an overall GPA of at least 2.5. Financial need is considered.

Richard Haswell Memorial Scholarship
Student must be a senior English major expected to graduate within two semesters with an overall GPA of 3.5. Preference will be given to students who indicate an intent to pursue graduate studies.

Mildred Henderson Ewing Memorial Scholarship*
Student must be a junior or senior English or writing major with at least a 3.0 GPA.

Robert Henigan Graduate Award
Student must be a graduate assistant in the English Department.

Robert Henigan Literature Scholarship
Student must be a freshman English major intending to focus on literature with a cumulative GPA above 2.49 and a GPA in English above 2.99.

Lee H. Morris Memorial Scholarship*
Student must be an upperclassman English major interested in a teaching career. Recipient must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA and a 3.25 GPA in English. Preference is given to a female student from southwest Missouri.

Elda E. Robins Memorial Scholarship*
Student must be an entering freshman majoring in English.

Kris Sutliff Scholarship in Professional Writing
Student must be a graduate student in the professional writing track of the M.A. in Writing. Recipients must be enrolled in at least 6 hours each semester and have a 3.5 GPA in English courses.

Myron L. Taylor Professional Writing Scholarship
Student must be a junior or senior professional writing major with an overall GPA of at least 3.0.

Richard M. Turner Scholarship
Student must be an incoming freshman majoring in English who has maintained a high school overall GPA of 2.5 and a GPA of 3.0 in English.

*Indicates that student must have a FAFSA on file by March 31st to be considered for this award.
