GENERAL FUNCTION

The Custodial Supervisor directs and oversees all aspects of custodial operations for one of the custodial shifts or zones. This position provides leadership and supervision of Custodial Leads, Specialists, and Custodians across multiple buildings and areas to ensure safe, reliable, efficient, and compliant operations. The position ensures compliance with federal regulations governing environmental protection, safety, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials. The position performs administrative duties and is responsible for training new employees, providing oversight and coordination of emergency response operations, and ensuring continuous operations when staffing gaps occur.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A high school diploma or the equivalent is required. Completion of a recognized training program in custodial operations, environmental services, facilities maintenance, building services, or a related field is preferred. An Associate's degree in Facilities Management, Business Management, Environmental Services, Occupational Safety, or a closely related field is preferred. Professional credentials such as ISSA Certified Custodial Supervisor (CCS), ISSA Cleaning Management Institute certifications, APPA’s Certified Educational Facilities Professional (CEFP) designation, or other relevant industry certification are preferred. Additional experience beyond the minimum requirements may be substituted for educational requirements.

Experience: At least four years custodial experience, is required. Knowledge of cleaning procedures, equipment and supplies, is required. Two years supervisory or informal leadership role, such as Custodial Lead, Custodial Specialist, or acting supervisor, is required. Custodial supervisory experience is preferred. Additional relevant education, training, or experience beyond the minimum requirements may be substituted for custodial or supervisory experience.

Skills:    Advanced knowledge of custodial cleaning methods, equipment, chemicals, and industry best practices is required. Supervisory skills, including the ability to instruct, coach, evaluate, and delegate work to others, are required. Proven ability to establish performance expectations, address performance concerns, and foster employee development is required. Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills, as well as strong verbal and written communication skills, are required. The ability to plan and schedule work, prioritize resources, and adapt to changing operational needs is required. Computer literacy and the ability to use work management, timekeeping, and other departmental software systems is required. Additional education beyond the minimum requirements may be substituted for either technical or supervisory experience.

Effort:    Requires the ability to access facilities and areas that may only be accessible by climbing ladders or stairs, bending, reaching, and prolonged walking or standing. Requires the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.  Requires full physical mobility to operate manual and powered cleaning equipment including snow shovels. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.

Other:  The position requires the use of chemical compounds for cleaning which may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, application and use are not properly followed.  A valid driver’s license is required. This position requires occasional coordination and response to emergencies and other unforeseen situations around the clock. This position is designated as an essential employee who must report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed, when required. The supervisor will communicate the situations when the position is required to report to work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provides strategic leadership and direction to custodial personnel to ensure continuous, safe and reliable delivery of custodial services for major divisions of the University, and campus-wide recycling pro meet customer expectations.

2. Develops and executes short- and long-range custodial strategies that integrate corrective, preventative, and predictive programs to optimize personnel and asset reliability, performance, and budget stewardship.

3. Establishes operational priorities and allocates labor, resources, and contracted services to maximize productivity, service responsiveness, and quality outcomes.

4. Leads workforce management efforts, including performance management, coaching, conflict resolution, succession planning, and administration of corrective or disciplinary actions in accordance with University policy.

5. Provides technical oversight and subject matter expertise for custodial services to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and support institutional sustainability goals.

6. Promotes a safe work environment by using tools properly, wearing required protective gear following safety protocols, and reporting unsafe conditions to supervisors.

7. Coordinates planning, campus communication, and execution of major maintenance activities, including the annual striping and waxing of floors, and supports emergency response and restoration efforts.

8. Manages operational resources, including tools, equipment, materials, and contracted services, to ensure efficient operations and minimize disruptions to campus.

9. Remains competent and current by engaging in self-directed learning, attending required training and participating in professional development activities.

10. Contributes to the overall success of the assigned department by performing daily custodial duties as needed and other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.


SUPERVISION

The Custodial Supervisor supervises leads, specialists, custodian I, custodian apprentices, temporary, contract, part-time, and student custodial staff.
