GENERAL FUNCTION

The Custodial Equipment Repair Specialist II performs preventative maintenance and repair of custodial equipment, such as floor scrubbers, high and low speed buffers, carpet extractors, wet-vacs, vacuums, etc.; maintains records of repairs and maintenance; and evaluates, recommends, assembles, distributes, and trains custodial staff on the equipment. This position is expected to perform a broader range of repairs independently and may handle more complex equipment issues as assigned. The position performs annual inventories of custodial supplies and equipment and assists with moving and set-up of furniture, equipment, and supplies as needed. This role handles advanced diagnostics, repairs, and may be responsible for preventive maintenance programs, equipment calibration, or training others. The position may be required to perform Custodial I tasks, including the removal of snow and/or ice, as needed to support the staffing needs of the organization.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A high school diploma or the equivalent is required. Specialized or technical training in the repair and maintenance of electric equipment, electronics, or small gasoline engines is preferred. An equivalence of experience beyond the minimum may be substituted for the minimum educational requirements.

Experience: At least three years of custodial experience which includes knowledge of cleaning procedures and supplies and experience with equipment assembly and repair is required. Experience in operating various motor vehicles, including light delivery vehicles, is required. Experience using material handling equipment, such as dollies, pallet jacks, hand trucks, platform trucks, and forklifts is preferred. An equivalent combination of years of experience and education may be considered for substitution of experience requirements. Skills: The ability to read English language sufficiently to understand written work orders and instructions as well as equipment assembly manuals, wiring diagrams, and directions for the proper mixture, use, and disposal/storage of cleaners, solvents, chemicals, and similar products used in custodial services is required. The ability to instruct other custodial personnel in proper cleaning procedures and the use of custodial supplies and equipment is required. Computer literacy and basic computer skills are required. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and with computerized inventory systems is preferred. Good communication and interpersonal skills are required. Good customer service and interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communication skills are required. The ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions is required. 

Effort: Maximum physical exertion is required on a daily basis in this job. Requires daily physical exertion, including frequently lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds unaided on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds occasionally with the use of a mechanical lift device or using a two-person lift, is required. Prolonged walking or standing and frequent bending, stooping, and reaching is required on a daily basis. Must have physical mobility sufficient to operate manual and electrically powered equipment and machines to include dollies, pallet jacks, hand trucks, platform trucks, floor scrubbers, buffers, carpet extractors, vacuums, and forklifts. Accessing certain areas may involve climbing ladders or stairs and working in confined spaces is required. Work is performed indoors and out-of-doors. This position is classified as essential and must report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to severe weather, as determined by the supervisor.

License: A valid driver’s license is required.

Other: The scope of the job requires exposure to and use of chemical compounds for cleaning which may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, application and use are not properly followed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Ensures custodial equipment is available, maintained, and functioning effectively by assembling and distributing new custodial equipment, providing preventive maintenance and repairs for custodial equipment, and evaluating and recommending the purchase of new custodial equipment.

2. Provides guidance or training to Custodial Specialist I staff or custodians as needed.

3. Maintains appropriate maintenance records by keeping records of all custodial equipment operating hours, preventive maintenance services performed, and repairs completed.

4. Recommends any necessary equipment replacements or suggested upgrades directly to the Custodial Supervisor based on performing maintenance records review.

5. Ensures the availability and accountability of required parts, components, and supplies by maintaining an inventory of parts and supplies for equipment, storing those items in an appropriate and secure container, and reordering replacement items, as necessary.

6. Leads routine property inventory by physically counting (by property number) various custodial equipment assigned to the department, but not limited to, floor buffers and waxers, vacuum cleaners, and wet/dry vacuums.

7. Develops and delivers training in proper care, use, and maintenance of custodial equipment to custodial staff.

8. Provides guidance and support for services, such as delivering items to buildings, picking up and storing items delivered to Central Receiving, maintaining control of supplies and inventory through use of a computerized inventory program.

9. Provides continuity of custodial services during personnel absences or under emergency conditions by performing custodial duties to cover areas without custodial support or directly related to emergency conditions, such as removal of snow or ice from sidewalks and entrances, and spreading salt, sand, or chemicals. or as the situation dictates,

10. Prepares indoor and outdoor locations for special events and activities by moving existing furniture and tarping floors (if necessary), and setting up (erecting) equipment, tables, chairs, portable steps, stages, podiums, curtains, sound shells, and other specifically requested items following set-up plans, diagrams, or verbal instructions, when required.

11. Assists with the removal of recyclable materials, when required.

12. Maintains knowledge, skills, and abilities through self-directed development and attends training and professional development, as assigned.

13. Contributes to the overall success of the assigned department by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.

SUPERVISION

The Custodial Equipment Repair Specialist II may supervise employees for short-term, defined periods while training other employees or working on special projects as directed by the Custodial Supervisor.
