GENERAL FUNCTION

The Custodial Lead provides leadership to a small team of custodians and performs semi-skilled custodial services for university facilities. Responsibilities include cleaning and maintaining classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas using manual and powered equipment; moving furniture and equipment for cleaning and events; and completing special assignments such as recycling and setups. This position also assists with snow and ice removal from entrances and walkways, following established procedures and safety guidelines.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A high school diploma or the equivalent is required. However, significant custodial experience beyond that required for the position may be substituted for the required formal education.

Experience: At least two years of experience in custodial services, which includes knowledge of cleaning procedures, equipment and supplies, is required. One year of supervisory experience is preferred. Additional education and experience beyond the minimum requirements may be substituted for either custodial or supervisory experience.

Skills: Must be able to read English language sufficiently to understand written work orders and instructions as well as directions for the proper mixture, use, and disposal/storage of cleaners, solvents, chemicals, and similar products used in custodial services. Problem-solving abilities, planning skills, adaptability, and reliability are required. Good customer service and interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communication skills are required. Must be able to instruct other custodial personnel in proper cleaning procedures and the use of custodial supplies and equipment. Computer literacy and basic computer skills are required.

Effort: Requires the ability to lift and carry custodial supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally with use of a mechanical life device or using a two-person lift, prolonged walking or standing and frequent bending, stooping, and reaching on a daily basis. Must have physical mobility sufficient to operate manual and electrically powered cleaning equipment and machines to include snow shovels. Requires the ability to access facilities and areas that may only be accessible by climbing ladders or stairs, bending, reaching on top of partitions, cabinets, bookcases, and ledges, moving furniture, supplies, equipment, or office machines. Must be able to move throughout assigned areas, as work is performed indoors and out-of-doors. This position is classified as essential and must report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to severe weather, as determined by the supervisor.

Other: The scope of the job requires exposure to and use of chemical compounds for cleaning which may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, application and use are not properly followed. A valid Missouri driver’s license is required. Position is subject to respond to after-hours emergencies and mandatory overtime.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Contributes to departmental objectives by performing all duties of a Custodian I as described in the Custodian I job description, including, but not limited to routine and specialized custodial tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, restocking supplies, trash removal, restroom cleaning and operating custodial equipment including buffers, vacuums, scrubbers, and extractors in accordance with safety standards.

2. Provides leadership to teams of custodians by serving as a communications point, directing activities, including regular inspections to ensure work quality, addressing minor performance or attendance issues, providing training, escalating unresolved issues to the Custodial Supervisor, developing draft annual performance appraisals, and assists the supervisor in providing the appraisal to the assigned staff.

3. Develops assigned staff in the proper methods and use of cleaning materials and equipment.

4. Provides continuity of custodial services during personnel absences or under emergency conditions by performing custodial duties to cover areas without custodial support.

5. Communicates work orders, scheduling changes, and special event needs to assigned staff and coordinates with the Custodial Supervisor regarding supply needs, staffing coverage, and building issues through the use of university computer systems and devices, including the work order system and tablet devices.

6. Ensures storage areas are maintained in a clean, safe, and organized manner, and monitors supply usage and notifies the Supervisor when restocking is needed.

7. Oversees special assignments supporting custodial operations, such as ordering, tracking, distributing custodial supplies and/or equipment; and ensures the safety and security of all assigned university physical assets.

8. Promotes and follows all safety and health regulations; ensures proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE); reports injuries, unsafe conditions, or facility maintenance issues.

9. Drives throughout the campus to support custodial operations and other duties of the position.

10. Serves as the Custodial Supervisor when the Custodial Supervisor is not available, as required.

11. Contributes to the overall success of the assigned department by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.

SUPERVISION

The Custodial Lead provides operational oversight of Custodial Apprentice, Custodian I, temporary, and student employees while participating with those employees in performing similar duties.
