GENERAL FUNCTION

The Academic Services Coordinator, I Succeed Center, leads, develops, and manages the University’s language support courses for undergraduate and graduate students in collaboration with the Language Institute and the Department of Languages, Cultures, and Religions. This position also oversees the I Succeed Center’s academic support services, providing academic, cultural, and language assistance to international undergraduate and graduate students.

The Coordinator oversees the development of curriculum, supervises teaching staff and graduate assistants, delivers instruction, and maintains collaborative relationships across campus to support and advocate for international student success and retention. This role also oversees program assessment, reporting, student support procedures, outreach, and development of new initiatives responsive to emerging needs of international students and University partners.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) or a Master’s degree in a related field with 18 hours of TESL coursework is required. 

Experience: Three years of experience teaching ESL or EFL courses in an accredited college or university, including at least one year of teaching English for Academic Purposes at an accredited college or university, is required. At least three years of experience in curriculum development, academic support programming, and/or international student services are preferred. At least one year of documented supervisory experience is required.

 Overseeing teaching experience at the university level is preferred. Demonstrated professional involvement in the field by having presented at a conference and/or publishing in TESOL-related journals is preferred.

Skills: Must have demonstrated skills using Microsoft Office applications and conducting research using the internet. Effective oral and written communication skills are required. Effective interpersonal skills are required. Intercultural competence and demonstrated ability to support multilingual learners is required. Excellent organizational, leadership, and program coordination is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Oversees all I Succeed Program courses in collaboration with the Director of the Language Institute, including hiring, training, planning, curriculum development, scheduling, instructor coordination, and assessment.

2. Leads the operation of the I Succeed Center academic support services, including walk‑in services, appointments, workshops, and events. Maintains and updates program procedures, support structures, and academic advisement for international students.

3. Serves as a primary liaison with International Services, Graduate College, Athletics, academic departments, and other campus partners to support the advisement, academic, linguistic, and cultural needs of international students.

4. Responds to international student needs, retention concerns, and emergent issues requiring problem‑solving and communication across units, including Academic Integrity cases.

5. Coordinates with related University committees, resource offices, and departments regarding program initiatives and to advocate for student needs and identify and mitigate retention barriers.

6. Leads semesterly program and curriculum review cycles for I Succeed courses and the Center and compiles and analyzes program data on enrollment, academic outcomes, workshop attendance, and student engagement for leadership review.

7. Supervises a small number of graduate assistants as well as full-time and per‑course instructors; assigns work, provides training, and conducts evaluations including class observations.

8. Creates and schedules academic workshops, special events, and support programming.

9. Coordinates planning and delivery of New International Student Orientation (NISO).

10. Creates and schedules academic workshops, special events, and support programming.

11. Coordinates International Teaching Assistant (ITA) exams and follow‑up processes for every ITA on campus.

12. Leads or participates in major curriculum development initiatives in collaboration with academic departments or international partners.

13. Serves on University committees addressing international student retention issues.

14. Conducts research on University policies and national standards to support course and program decisions.

15. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required by the Director of the International Center.

16. Helps to ensure the success of international students at Missouri State University by performing all other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION

The Academic Services Coordinator, I Succeed Center supervises both per course and full-time instructors, graduate teaching assistants, and practicum students.
