GENERAL FUNCTION
The International Admissions and Outreach Coordinator plans, organizes, and implements marketing, communications, and supports efforts by studying market conditions to identify learning needs and directs marketing efforts to support the growth of international enrollment. This position establishes effective international relationships by serving as a liaison between MSU and African universities, high schools, and businesses. This position provides a variety of academic and support services for international students, including advising African student organizations. This position serves as a liaison for international students by providing language translation, cultural guidance, and logistical support.
The International Admissions and Outreach Coordinator also reviews and evaluates academic credentials, financial resources, and English language proficiency of prospective students from nations across the African continent to determine eligibility for admission to the University and for scholarship awards. This position advises prospective students regarding admission requirements, enrollment, and U.S. immigration regulations concerning both F1 and J1 students.
Continuation of this position is dependent on sufficient revenue being generated by MSU International Programs.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, International Affairs, Regional Studies, or related field is required. A master’s degree is preferred. An equivalent combination of years of experience and education may be considered for substitution of educational requirements.
Experience: At least two years of administrative experience in a university setting is required. Experience in international student support and/or admissions is required. Experience in translation and interpretation is required. Experience living in Africa is preferred. Familiarity with the Student Exchange Visitors Program (SEVP) and the Department of Homeland Security policies and procedures regarding international student admission is required. Experience of working in an application admission portal such as SLATE or other comparable application software platform is required.
Skills: Verbal and written fluency in English is required. In addition, verbal and written fluency in a prominent language of Africa is preferred. Effective interpersonal skills are required. Effective verbal and written communication skills are required. A working knowledge of both U.S. and African cultures and customs is required. An understanding of intercultural negotiations, institutional dynamics, and strategic communication skills is required. Strong analytical, communication, and critical-thinking skills are required. Strong understanding of international political systems, global economic trends, and cultural dynamics is preferred. Demonstrated skills in the use of Microsoft Office applications is required.
Other: The scope of the position requires the ability to work weekends and flexible hours.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Represents MSU internationally in establishing and maintaining relationships with universities, high schools, businesses, organizations, recruiting agents, and professional associations that are current or potential sources for program participants in international education and training programs.2. Provides expertise in developing culturally and linguistically appropriate messaging for international marketing and promotional materials.
3. Studies market conditions by collecting and analyzing data to identify learning needs and develop marketing strategies to support the growth of international enrollment.
4. Measures the effectiveness of marketing strategies to reach international partners and prospective students, reporting findings to management.
5. Facilitates achievement of established education goals and objectives for African student enrollment by evaluating and processing applications, obtaining information needed to evaluate courses and transcripts from educational institutions, and determining the equivalency of those courses and transcripts for transfer credit.
6. Serves as a liaison between the University, the student or prospective student, and African national consular posts in the U.S. as well as U.S. consular posts in African nations.
7. Determines the validity and acceptability of the student’s financial resources and the adequacy of the student’s English language proficiency by using University and U.S. Department of Homeland Security criteria.
8. Advises enrolled international students regarding accomplishing their educational goals while maintaining immigration status by providing information, monitoring student status, and advising students of possible courses of action and consequences of actions.
9. Coordinates program arrangements, academic advisory, and cultural support for international students in coordination with the appropriate academic departments, administrative offices, and external organizations in the local community.
10. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed by the supervisor.
11. Helps ensure the overall success and growth of the University by performing all other duties as assigned.SUPERVISION
The International Admissions and Outreach Coordinator may supervise student and non-student
part-time employees and graduate assistants.
