The Assistant Librarian provides assistance with the operations of the Garnett Library, particularly acquisition, collection development, cataloging, and other processing activities. The Assistant Librarian provides reference support as needed for students and faculty, class tours, and other bibliographic instruction. The Assistant Librarian is responsible for acquisitions, collection statistics, budgetary aspects, and other objectives set for library service to the Barbe Library (Mountain Grove campus). The Assistant Librarian provides technical assistance to the Library Computer Lab.


Education: Master’s degree in library science or equivalent degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program.

Experience: Previous experience in libraries, particularly academic library settings, is required. Supervisory experience is required. Curriculum and teaching experience is preferred.

Skills: Knowledge of MARC records, AACR2, LCSH, LC classification and automated cataloging functions is required. Proficiency with word processing, databases, spreadsheets, online searching, and the use of an Integrated Library System (ILS) is required. Instruction and demonstration skills, reference interviewing skills, a willingness to update skills, and the ability to function as a team member with library staff.

Other: Excellent oral and written communication and strong interpersonal skills are required. The ability to move equipment and materials weighing up to forty pounds is required. Attention to detail is required. The work environment may include occasional mold and dust from library materials. The position may require working evening and weekend hours on a regular basis. Hours of work may vary during intersessions and summer sessions.


1. Manages all book, serial, and audiovisual acquisitions for both the library budget and Friends of the Library donated funds and assists in maintaining a balanced collection appropriate to the university’s curriculum.

2. Oversee the purchasing of supplies and equipment, as well as books, serials and audiovisuals, by preparing purchase orders and payment requests and assisting with all budgetary aspects.

3. Selects and processes memorial and honorarium books and provides reports and statistics to the Development Office of all gifts and donations.

4. Assists with the cataloging of all library materials, including juvenile books, reference continuation series, serials, and other special collections in all formats using OCLC, AACR2, LCSH, and LC Classification.

5. Provides reference assistance using both print and electronic sources when assigned to the circulation desk or for in-depth questions forwarded by staff or by telephone.

6. Works the service area as assigned during evenings, weekends, or as required and maintains a working knowledge of circulation, interlibrary loan, and overdue procedures.

7. Provides library instruction, tours, and demonstrations, advises students as assigned by the Student Advisement and Academic Support office, and teaches LIS 101 Introduction to Libraries as required.

8. Maintains acquisition statistics and provides monthly and annual reports of all additions and other changes in the library’s collection.

9. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the Head Librarian.

10. Contributes to the overall success of the libraries of the West Plains campus by serving on library and university committees as assigned and performing all other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.


The Assistant Librarian is supervised by the Head Librarian and works in cooperation with the Cataloger/Reference Librarian, Circulation/Shelving supervisor, and supervises library staff in the absence of the Head Librarian.
