GENERAL FUNCTION
The Assistant Director of Campus Recreation-Recreational Sports and Youth Programs supervises and coordinates the recreational sports programs, including intramural sports which supplement the University’s academic program and provides guidance and support for registered student organization sport club programs. This position develops, implements, and evaluates year-round youth programming—including Camp Claw, with emphasis on curriculum development, child safety compliance, parent communication, risk management, and supervision of seasonal youth staff. The Assistant Director manages all aspects of Recreational Sports, including sport scheduling, staff training, program development, marketing coordination, and risk management. The role also provides oversight and guidance for all registered student organization Club Sports.
The position hires, trains, and supervises a large student workforce for both Recreational Sports and Youth Programs, manages multiple budgets, ensures compliance with university and state policies regarding minors, and supports long-range planning and assessment for departmental goals. The Assistant Director of Campus Recreation-Recreational Sports and Youth Programs assumes other responsibilities as directed by the Associate Director or Director of Campus Recreation.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A bachelor's degree is required; a master’s degree is preferred. Preferred fields include recreational sports management, college student personnel, education, student affairs, or related areas.
Experience: At least one year of experience working in recreational sports is required; preference will be given to candidates having experience with direct administrative responsibilities in intramural sports and registered student organization sport club programs. Experience in youth programming or camp administration is required. Experience supervising student employees is required. A strong background in risk management involving minors and sport environments, especially as it relates to intramural sports and registered student organization sport clubs is required. A demonstrated knowledge of intramural sports league scheduling and registered student organization sport club programs is preferred. Officiating experience preferred. (State certified or above.)
Skills: Strong organizational, supervisory, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills required. Ability to develop youth curriculum, manage parent communication, and supervise staff working with minors is required. Computer literacy is required. Experience with recreation or registration software is preferred. A working knowledge of financial operations is preferred.
Certifications: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillator (AED), and First Aid certifications are required. CPR/AED/First Aid instructor certifications are preferred. Must meet MSU requirements for working with minors and successfully complete child safety training.
Other: The scope of the position requires attendance at evening and/or weekend activities, meetings, and workshops. A valid driver’s license is required or must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
For Recreational Sports & Club Sports:
1. Manages daily operations of the Recreational Sports program, including scheduling leagues, publishing brackets, conducting evaluations, updating rules, supervising staff, and ensuring safety and risk management practices.2. Provides guidance, training, and oversight for 20+ Club Sports, including approving travel, scheduling practices, maintaining rosters, supporting student leaders, and updating policy manuals.
3. Coordinates hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation of undergraduate student employees and graduate assistants supporting Recreational Sports and Club Sports.
4. Develops and updates policies such as Rec Sports Policy Manual, Sportsmanship Policy, conduct procedures, emergency protocols, and staff accountability systems.
5. Assists with major departmental events and initiatives (e.g., tournaments, Greek Week, Family Weekend).
6. Develops program goals using learning outcomes; assists with budget development, equipment purchasing, and financial management.
7. Collaborates with Marketing to promote Recreational Sports programming.
For Youth Programs:
8. Provides full administrative leadership over Youth Programs, including Camp Claw, Parents’ Night Out, and year-round youth events. Responsibilities include:- Developing weekly curriculum, character development content, and seasonal activities;
- Coordinating staff certification in CPR, First Aid, lifeguarding, and belay;
- Creating and updating parent manuals, training guides, and youth program policies;
- Ensuring compliance with university and state child protection standards.
10. Provides high-level parent communication, including responding to emails/phone calls, conducting parent meetings as needed, addressing camper behavior issues, and managing sensitive communication or incidents involving minors.
11. Oversees camp registration and program logistics, including creating registration portals, monitoring enrollment, coordinating food service, managing equipment purchasing, and communicating with campus partners (Dining, Facilities, Athletics, Safety).
12. Manages the Youth Programs budget, including revenue forecasting, purchasing, payroll approval, and reporting.
13. Ensures risk management and emergency preparedness, including camper-to-staff ratios, incident response, facility safety, and staff training on youth protection.
Cross-Functional and Departmental Leadership:
14. Maintains campus partnerships with Athletics, OSE, Dining Services, Facilities, Safety, IT, and other MSU departments to ensure smooth program operations.15. Conducts assessments, satisfaction surveys, participation reports, and program evaluations for Rec Sports, Club Sports, and Youth Programs.
16. Remains current through professional development, certifications, conferences, and NIRSA involvement.
17. Performs other duties as assigned to support the success of Campus Recreation.
SUPERVISION
The Assistant Director of Campus Recreation - Recreational Sports supervises student employees and Graduate Assistants of Recreational Sports.
