GENERAL FUNCTION
The Director of China Programs oversees the daily operations of China Programs. The Director of China Programs works with partner institutions, negotiates and maintains agreements with Chinese university partners and coordinates the development of academic programs between Missouri State University and China partner universities. The Director of China Programs assists, advises, and helps Chinese students studying at MSU and visiting scholars to acclimate to life in the US and to access campus and community resources.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Bachelor’s degree is required.
Experience: Three years of experience working with Chinese universities and/or Chinese nationals studying in the United States is required.
Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required; excellent interpersonal skills are required. Knowledge of the culture and customs of a variety of countries is required, particularly US and China. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
Other: A valid driver’s license is required. The scope of the position requires the ability to work weekends and flexible hours.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Oversees the operations of the Office of China Programs by advising and assisting Chinese students and visiting scholars, providing academic and cultural support, and helping them access needed resources.
2. Develops and maintains academic and research partnerships with institutions of higher education in China.
3. Facilitates student and faculty exchanges with partner institutions.
4. Advises students on academic and vocational curricula and career issues.
5. Collaborates with members of the public schools and with the business community to improve programs, develop new programs, and to provide student access to learning opportunities such as internships or travel-study, such as field trips.
6. Translates Chines bookkeeping documents from China, evaluates transcriptions, and assists with immigration documents for visiting Chinese scholars.
7. Participates in student recruitment, registration, and placement activities.
8. Serves as an advisor to student organizations.
9. Assists the Vice President for Research and Economic Development and international Programs in the overall management of the LNU/MSU College of International Business in Dalian, People’s Republic of China.
10. Works to resolve enrollment, registration, academic, cultural, and housing issues that arise with Chinese students studying at MSU.
11. Oversees the award of scholarships for Chinese students studying at MSU.
12. Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
13. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required by the supervisor.
14. Supports the overall success of the Office of China Programs by performing all other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION
The Director of China Programs supervises part-time staff, graduate assistants, and student workers and is supervised by Vice President of Community and Global Partnerships.
