GENERAL FUNCTION

 

The Business Process and Reporting Analyst Student Success advances university-wide student success initiatives by transforming validated institutional data into actionable information that supports strategic decision making, student outreach, advising, academic support, predictive analytics, and continuous improvement across the Office of Student Success.

Working in close partnership with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness (OIE), the Analyst utilizes validated institutional datasets, reports, dashboards, and performance metrics to conduct operational analyses that identify student populations, evaluate intervention effectiveness, monitor student success outcomes, and inform evidence-based decision making. The Analyst collaborates with Institutional Research to define analytical needs and obtain validated data but does not maintain enterprise reporting systems or produce official institutional reports.

The Analyst develops actionable student segments (including non-registrants, stop-outs, early-term disengagement, gateway course enrollment, first-generation students, Pell-eligible students, transfer students, readmitted students, and other targeted populations), designs performance reports, monitors key performance indicators, supports predictive analytics and early-alert initiatives (and other student success technologies), and provides analytical support for planning and continuous improvement.

This position applies validated institutional data to improve student success operations, evaluate programs and interventions, support strategic planning, and strengthen data-informed decision making throughout the Office of Student Success. The position complements the work of Institutional Research by translating institutional data into operational insights and actionable recommendations for student success practitioners.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A Bachelor’s degree in a computer-related field is preferred. Master’s preferred. An equivalent combination of years of experience and education may be considered for substitution of educational requirements.

Experience: A minimum of two years of experience in one or more of the following areas is required: a) leadership and management of information technology projects, b) analysis of data systems for the enhancement of business operations, or c) production of advanced report writing through database application programming with fluency exhibited in at least three of the following: PL/SQL, SQL, Argos, Applications Manager (i.e. AppWorx), HTML, ASP, XML, GRAILS, Oracle tools, or similar languages or tools. Experience with relational databases and SQL is required. A minimum of one year of project lead experience is required. A minimum of one year of experience in the design of complex database-driven application systems is preferred. Knowledge of Ellucian’s Banner software suite and ODS/EDW is preferred. Experience with university student success data development is preferred. Supervisory experience is preferred. Work experience in higher education is preferred; work experience in the functional area is preferred.

Skills: The ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, reason analytically, and work with people possessing differing levels of technical knowledge is required. The ability to solve complex procedural and/or software problems by using logic, creativity, technical, and interpersonal skills is required. Experience working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment with a focus on providing excellent customer service is required. The ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to information processed, stored, or accessed by the systems is required. Effective verbal and written communication skills and proficiency in writing technical specifications are required. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 1. Conducts operational analyses using validated institutional datasets provided through the Office of Institutional Research to identify student populations requiring targeted outreach, advising, and intervention.

2. Develops and maintains student segmentation models supporting retention, persistence, progression, completion, enrollment, and student engagement initiatives.

3.Monitors key student success indicators including retention, persistence, progression, gateway course performance, advising engagement, student participation, graduation outcomes, and other institutional student success metrics.

4. Evaluates the effectiveness of student success initiatives through quantitative and qualitative assessment and recommend evidence-based improvements.

5. Identifies trends, emerging issues, equity gaps, and opportunities to improve student success outcomes through ongoing analysis.

6. Collaborates with the Office of Institutional Research to define analytical requirements, validate methodologies, ensure consistent institutional definitions, and obtain approved datasets.

7. Prepares executive summaries, presentations, briefing materials, and visualizations that communicate analytical findings to Student Success leadership and campus stakeholders.

8. Supports the development, implementation, and continuous refinement of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), benchmarks, and performance monitoring processes.

9. Assists departments within Student Success in interpreting institutional data and applying findings to improve programs, services, operational effectiveness, and student outcomes.

10. Supports predictive analytics, early-alert systems, and student success technologies—including future student success platforms—by analyzing engagement patterns, monitoring intervention effectiveness, identifying students requiring additional support, and recommending data-informed improvements to outreach and student success strategies.

11. May design and develop student success applications as needed including programming SQL procedures and database objects and developing predictive analytics.

12. Creates and maintains data warehouse structures and as necessary may work to design system integrations between Banner and student success platforms.

13. Develops and tests software specifications and application architecture in cooperation with IT as needed for the department as well as testing and modifying enterprise applications.

14. Maintains knowledge of emerging best practices in student success analytics, predictive analytics, intervention design, assessment, higher education performance measurement, and data-informed student success practices.

15. Contributes to the overall success of the Office of Student Success by performing other duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISION

The Student Success Data Specialist has no direct reports or supervisory duties.
