GENERAL FUNCTION

The Accessibility Coordinator assists the General Counsel & Vice President for Legal Affairs & Compliance in ensuring that the University maintains compliance with all the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (“ADA”), the Fair Housing Act of 1968 (“FHA”), the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (“IDEA”), and the Missouri Human Rights Act (“MHRA”). The Accessibility Coordinator also serves as the ADA Compliance Coordinator for the University system, including both the Springfield and West Plains campuses.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in Human Resources Management or a related field. A Master’s degree in Human Resources Management or a related field is strongly preferred.

Experience: At least three (3) years of employment in an equal opportunity, compliance management, and/or case management position is required. Equal 0pportunity and disability compliance experience in higher education is preferred. Knowledge of government agencies and their regulations, at a policy level, as well as thorough knowledge of Section 504, the ADA, the FHA, the IDEA, and the MHRA are required.  Knowledge of discrimination experienced by specific protected classes, as identified by federal and state enforcement agencies, is required. Experience in presenting training programs and workshops on compliance topics is required.

Skills: Demonstrated ability to design, develop, and implement programs and services in response to regulatory compliance needs is required. Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills and strong quantitative skills are required.  Computer competency, particularly in the use of computerized applicant and employee databases and similar computer applications, is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Works closely with the General Counsel & Vice President for Legal Affairs & Compliance, the Director of the Office of Institutional Compliance, the Title IX Coordinator, and the Director of Human Resources to ensure that the University is compliant with its various regulatory compliance obligations.

2. Serving as the ADA Compliance Coordinator, ensures the University's compliance with all applicable laws and regulations regarding services for individuals with disabilities by receiving, assessing, and addressing requests for the provision of reasonable accommodations by faculty and staff; receives, evaluates, and addresses reports of accessibility barriers related to University facilities and campuses; provides training on accessibility, disability rights, and discrimination on the basis of disability; and recommends appropriate solutions and advises senior administrators on topics such as disability rights and issues, attitudes regarding persons with disabilities, reasonable accommodations, technology, and facility access and other barriers.

3. Ensures the University's compliance with all applicable laws and regulations regarding the free exercise of religion by receiving, assessing, and addressing faculty, staff, and student requests for the provision of religious accommodations.

4. Ensures the University's compliance with all applicable laws and regulations regarding pregnant and parenting individuals by receiving, assessing, and addressing faculty, staff, and student requests for the provision of pregnancy and/or parenting accommodations.

5. Ensures that University policies and procedures related to their areas of responsibility (e.g., accessibility, religious accommodations, pregnancy and parenting accommodations) are compliant with current regulatory obligations and prepares and recommends revisions to same when appropriate.

6. Develops a network of informed representatives of the University community which promotes an awareness and understanding of the University's commitment, activities, and efforts regarding accessibility and universal design through avenues including by chairing the President’s Council on Accessibility and chairing and/or serving on other committees as assigned, providing education and training to designated University employees and students, and other appropriate approaches.

7. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required by the General Counsel & Vice President for Legal Affairs & Compliance.

8. Contributes to the overall success of the University by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

SUPERVISION

The Accessibility Coordinator reports to and receives administrative supervision from the General Counsel & Vice President for Legal Affairs & Compliance, and functions independently within the guidelines of the University's personnel policies and regulations, coordinates with all appropriate unit heads, and exercises considerable judgment and initiative in planning, organizing, and completing assignments.
