Session abstract

First-generation students may feel that they are juggling to keep up with their personal and academic responsibilities, which produces anxiety over “dropping the ball.” This session will identify challenges unique to first-gen students and offer effective strategies for developing trust and support, such as applying Appreciative Advising and services used by TRIO programs. Participants will be encouraged to identify best practices specific to their institution type to maximize student success.

Learning objectives

  • Participants will be able to identify specific challenges faced by first-generation students.
  • Participants will learn best practices for creating a trust-based relationship with students in order to ensure student success.
  • Participants will be able to identify helping resources on their campus that can help “lighten the load” of first-generation students.
