College Orientation: A Bridge to Student Success

Session abstract
This session overviews Crowder College’s implementation of a first-year experience course. College Orientation is designed to assist students from diverse geographic, educational, and socio-economic backgrounds as they transition into higher education. Assessment data highlights the effectiveness of the program from both the students’ and faculty members’ points-of-view. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and to apply the information to their own institutions.
Learning objectives
- Provide an overview of the course content, structure, and objectives. Strategies to ensure consistency among delivery models, and systematic methods to keep the content current and relevant will be addressed.
- Research data will be shared to highlight the effectiveness of the program from both the students’ and faculty members’ points-of view. Institutional assessment measures are provided to validate the success of the program among various student populations including first-generation freshmen.
- Both lessons learned and questions still-to-be-answered are considered during the presentation. College Orientation continues to evolve in order to ensure positive student outcomes. Throughout the presentation audience members are encouraged to reflect on their own practices.
