Economics Undergraduate Program

A STEM-designated economics degree. Missouri State's economics program carries an official STEM designation, recognizing the quantitative, data-driven skills you'll build — the same skills employers in banking, tech, consulting, and government pay a premium for.

Why major in economics at Missouri State?

  • Our economics degrees are STEM-designated, reflecting a rigorous, quantitative curriculum — and qualifying international graduates to apply for a 24-month STEM OPT work-authorization extension.

  • You'll enjoy many opportunities to get involved with the university, which will both further your education and build relationships with faculty and fellow students.
  • You'll have options to tailor your curriculum to your educational and professional goals.
  • Your classes are taught by full-time faculty members, and we're dedicated to helping you make the most of your education.

What does STEM-designated mean for you?

Missouri State's undergraduate economics degrees are officially designated as STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs by the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development, under criteria set by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

For every student, the designation signals what our curriculum delivers: serious training in data analysis, econometrics, and quantitative reasoning — the skills that consistently top employer demand lists.

For international students, it means more time to launch a U.S. career. Graduates of STEM-designated programs on an F-1 visa can apply to extend their Optional Practical Training (OPT) by an additional 24 months — up to three years of post-graduation work authorization in total.

Careers and outcomes

Economics majors who wish to pursue careers in business, public administration or government, or wish to attend graduate school or law school will find that a degree in economics has much to offer.

Business careers

Businesses of all sizes use economists for forecasting, strategic planning and data analysis. Many business economists have careers in manufacturing, banking, financial services and investments.

Public administration/Government careers

From the Federal Trade Commission to the Food and Drug Administration, economists are employed by virtually every federal agency. Economists also find employment with state and local governments.

Graduate school opportunities

Economics majors interested in teaching or conducting research will usually be required to pursue a master’s degree to teach in community colleges and a doctorate to teach in four-year schools. Research opportunities exist in consulting firms, federal government agencies and international organizations. Successful research is generally a prerequisite for being granted tenure at a university.

Law school opportunities
