Closing the Gap: Proactive Advising Cohort 4, Retention over 3 semesters

This table provides data on RCOAL and CNAS proactive advising cohorts from Fall 2020.

The title of the first column in the table is First-Generation Student Groups. The remaining two columns look at retention by particular semester as follows: Semester 2, Spring 2021; and Semester 3, Fall 2021.

RCOAL Proactive First-Gen Cohort (N=93)

There are four rows listed under the RCOAL Proactive First-Gen Cohort: MSU First-Gen Students (N=702), Proactive Difference, RCOAL First-Gen Non-Participants (N=10), and Within College Difference.

Retention by semester results for RCOAL Proactive First-Gen Cohort (N=93):

Semester 2 = 87%; and Semester 3 = 69%.

Retention by semester results for MSU First-Gen Students (N=702):

Semester 2 = 83%; and Semester 3 = 75%.

Retention difference between RCOAL Proactive First-Gen Cohort and MSU First-Gen students: 

For semester 2, the retention for the RCOAL proactive advising cohort is 4% higher than the retention for MSU first-generation students; for semester 3, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 6% lower.

Retention by semester results for RCOAL First-Gen Non-Participants (N=10):

Semester 2 = 80%; and Semester 3 = 50%.

Retention difference within college between RCOAL Proactive First-Gen Cohort and RCOAL First-Gen non-participants: 

For semester 2, the retention for the RCOAL proactive advising cohort is 7% higher than for the RCOAL first-generation non-participants; for semester 3, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 19% higher.

CNAS Proactive First-Gen Cohort (N=71)

There are three rows listed under the CNAS Proactive First-Gen Cohort: Proactive Difference, CNAS First-Gen Non-Participants (N=41), and Within College Difference.

Retention by semester results for CNAS Proactive First-Gen Cohort (N=71):

Semester 2 = 79%; and Semester 3 = 59%.

Retention difference between CNAS Proactive First-Gen Cohort and MSU First-Gen students: 

For semester 2, the retention for the CNAS proactive advising cohort is 4% lower than the retention for MSU first-generation students; for semester 3, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 16% lower.

Retention by semester results for CNAS First-Gen Non-Participants (N=41):

Semester 2 = 88%; and Semester 3 = 71%.

Retention difference within college between CNAS Proactive First-Gen Cohort and CNAS First-Gen non-participants: 

For semester 2, the retention for the CNAS proactive advising cohort is 9% lower and the retention for CNAS first-generation non-participants; for semester 3, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 12% lower.
