Closing the Gap: Proactive Advising Cohort 2, Retention over 7 semesters

This table provides data on RCOAL and CNAS proactive advising cohorts from Fall 2018.

The title of the first column in the table is First-Generation Student Groups. The remaining six columns look at retention by particular semester as follows: Semester 2, Spring 2019; Semester 3, Fall 2019; Semester 4, Spring 2020; Semester 5, Fall 2020; Semester 6, Spring 2021; and Semester 7, Fall 2021.

RCOAL Proactive First-Gen Cohort (N=117)

There are four rows listed under the RCOAL Proactive First-Gen Cohort: MSU First Gen Students (N=994), Proactive Difference, RCOAL First-Gen Non-Participants (N=21), and Within College Difference.

Retention by semester results for RCOAL Proactive First-Gen Cohort (N=117):

Semester 2 = 90%; Semester 3 = 79%; Semester 4 = 73%, Semester 5 = 65%; Semester 6 = 63%, and Semester 7 = 65%.

Retention by semester results for MSU First-Gen Students (N=994):

Semester 2 = 85%; Semester 3 = 72%; Semester 4 = 66%; Semester 5 = 60%; Semester 6 = 58%; and Semester 7 = 56%.

Retention difference between RCOAL Proactive First-Gen Cohort and MSU First-Gen students: 

For semester 2, the retention for the RCOAL proactive advising cohort is 5% higher than the retention for MSU first-generation students; for semester 3, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 7% higher; for semester 4, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 7% higher; for semester 5, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 5% higher; for semester 6, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 5% higher; and for semester 7, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 9% higher.

Retention by semester results for RCOAL First-Generation Non-Participants (N=21):

Semester 2 = 56%; Semester 3 = 52%; Semester 4 = 57%; Semester 5 = 48%; Semester 6 = 43%; and Semester 7 = 48%.

Retention difference within college between RCOAL Proactive First-Gen Cohort and RCOAL First-Gen non-participants: 

For semester 2, the retention for the RCOAL proactive advising cohort is 14% higher than for the RCOAL first-generation non-participants; for semester 3, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 27% higher; for semester 4, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 16% higher; for semester 5, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 17% higher; for semester 6, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 20% higher; and for semester 7, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 17% higher.

CNAS Proactive First-Gen Cohort (N=113)

There are three rows listed under the CNAS Proactive First-Gen Cohort: Proactive Difference, CNAS First-Gen Non-Participants (N=44), and Within College Difference.

Retention by semester results for CNAS Proactive First-Gen Cohort (N=113):

Semester 2 = 85%; Semester 3 = 70%; Semester 4 = 65%; Semester 5 = 58%; Semester 6 = 58%; and Semester 7 = 58%.

Retention difference between CNAS Proactive First-Gen Cohort and MSU First-Gen students: 

For semester 2, the retention for both groups is the same; for semester 3, the retention for the CNAS proactive advising cohort is 2% lower than the retention for MSU first-generation students; for semester 4, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 1% lower; for semester 5, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 2% lower; for semester 6, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is the same; and for semester 7, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 2% higher.

Retention by semester results for CNAS First-Gen Non-Participants (N=44):

Semester 2 = 73%; Semester 3 = 57%; Semester 4 = 52%; Semester 5 = 48%; Semester 6 = 44%; and Semester 7 = 43%.

Retention difference within college between CNAS Proactive First-Gen Cohort and CNAS First-Gen non-participants: 

For semester 2, the retention for the CNAS proactive advising cohort is 12% higher than for the CNAS first-generation non-participants; for semester 3, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 13% higher; for semester 4, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 13% higher; for semester 5, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 10% higher; for semester 6, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 14% higher; and for semester 7, the retention for the proactive advising cohort is 15% higher.
