  • When entering current/future courses and grades expected to earn it is important that you enter the correct course credit hours on those courses. The system does not check to ensure that the credit hours entered for those courses are valid (nor does it check that the courses entered are valid).
  • Do not include courses that will be graded Pass/Not Pass as they do not impact GPA and will skew the results generated by the GPA Calculator.
  • If you are calculating a GPA based on repeating a course in which you earned a D or F grade, you should reduce your Current Hours Attempted and possibly your Current Grade Points when completing the form. You should first review the Repeat Policy to ensure that you understand it correctly.
  • If you earned a D grade the first time you took a course and are now taking the course a second time, then you can subtract the credit hours attempted and the grade points earned for that original course from your Current Hours Attempted and your Current Grade Points. For instance, if you earned a D grade in a 3 credit hour course that your are now repeating you may subtract 3 from your hours attempted and 3 from your grade points when completing the form.
  • If you earned an F grade the first time you took a course and are now taking the course a second time, then you can subtract the credit hours attempted for that original course from your Current Hours. For instance, if you earned an F grade in a 3 credit hour course that your are now repeating you may subtract 3 from your hours attempted when completing the form.
  • If you have received Special Permission from the department head to repeat a course in which you earned a C or better grade, or for a course in which you earned a D grade and repeated and earned another D grade, or for a course in which you failed and then repeated and earned a D grade, then you would NOT subtract any hours or points when completing the form.

Calculating the GPA impact when repeating one or more courses can be extremely complex. We encourage you to seek guidance from the Office of the Registrar or your advisor when such a calculation is needed.

If you have further questions regarding GPA calculations or this GPA Calculator tool, please contact the Office of the Registrar.
