Two standard graduate assistantship stipend rates are offered for the academic year. The lower rate is used for most assistantships, but a higher rate is offered in limited situations. Note that departments/offices do have flexibility in the determination of the stipend and may offer stipends above the higher stipend amount as long as the number of assistantships remains at or above the previous year’s totals.
A graduate assistant is required to complete a minimum of 6 hours of graduate course work (600-level or above) during each semester of appointment, and must maintain a graduate GPA of 3.00. Some departments/units may require graduate assistants to take more than 6 hours of course work.
A limited number of graduate assistantships are available during the summer session. Summer graduate assistants are required to complete a minimum of 3 hours of graduate course work during the summer session.
Refer to the Graduate College website for stipend amounts.
The payment of stipends will depend upon the specific appointment period the student is hired for:
- Stipends for Academic Year (AY) appointments will be received in nine equal payments starting at the end of September and going through the end of May. Students will not receive a paycheck in the summer.
- Stipends for Fall (FA) appointments will be received in 4 equal payments starting at the end of September and going through the end of December. Students will not receive a paycheck in January, even if reappointed for the spring semester.
- Stipends for Spring (SP) appointments will be received in 4 equal payments starting at the end of February and going through the end of May. Students will not receive a paycheck in January.
- Stipends for Summer (SU) appointments will be received in 2 equal payments, to be received the end of June and July.
Students who are awarded a graduate assistantship are also eligible to receive fee-waiver scholarships. Note that graduate assistants whose appointment paperwork is received in the Graduate College after September 15 (for fall semester) and February 15 (for spring semester) will not be eligible for the fee-waiver scholarship.
