The Missouri State Choir program is known for its vocal excellence over the past half-century. Whether it’s the Concert Chorale, Chamber Singers or Collegiate Chorale, there is a place for you if you enjoy singing. Many of the choirs require auditions for participation, but the Thursday night choir is open to all who love singing. These choirs combine each spring to present a large choral/orchestral masterwork in the President’s Concert. Each December, the Choirs present a series of Madrigal Dinners in Plaster Student Union as a fundraiser for scholarships and choir travel. In even-numbered years, the choir usually has an international trip; in odd-numbered years, the choirs tour nationally.
The Missouri State Concert Chorale rehearses daily at noon and is the primary touring choir of the Department of Music. The select choir of 43 voices has appeared at national and regional conventions of ACDA and MENC, in tours throughout the United States and in three major concert tours to Europe. In 1996 the Chorale toured to Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest under the auspices of the Friendship Ambassadors Foundation. A compact disc recording of the Concert Chorale is available for $15 by writing to the choral department.
The Missouri State Chamber Singers rehearses thrice weekly and is a chamber choir of 24 voices. It tours and performs at various functions on and off campus, including the annual Elizabethan Christmas Dinners in December.
The Missouri State Collegiate Singers is a select choir of 80 voices that rehearses twice a week. It performs at the annual Elizabethan Christmas Dinners, a fall choral concert, and major choral works with orchestra in the spring semester.
The Missouri State Collegiate Chorale is a mixed choir of 90 voices that rehearses one evening a week. Its major performing role is in singing a fall concert, a Christmas concert, and in presenting major works each spring. In recent years, the choirs have come together to present Haydn's "Creation," Mendelssohn's "Elijah," and in 1996, Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem."
Students enrolled in the choirs have extensive opportunities for solo roles in the oratorios and other major works presented on campus. Each spring the ACDA Student Chapter at Missouri State sponsors a student conducting concert; conducting students have the opportunity to work with the Concert Chorale for 5-6 weeks and conduct before an evening audience in the Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts. All rehearsals and concerts by the choirs are held in this wonderful facility.
Music major status is not required to audition for any of the select choirs. One-hour credit is provided for participation in each choir. Auditions for choirs are held the first two days of school in August. Contact Dr. Guy B. Webb, Coordinator of Choral Studies, at (417) 836-5182, or via email at GuyWebb@MissouriState.edu.
