Scholarships and Financial Aid
The Modern and Classical Language Department provides many scholarships. Below are the scholarships offered by our department. You may also qualify for additional University scholarships. The office of financial aid provides information about University scholarships, grants and loans.
Unless noted, all scholarships require at least the submission of the Online General and Departmental Scholarship Application by March 1. If additional application materials are required, the details are included within the scholarship’s description below.

Rosemond Owens Clapp Scholarship Honoring Dr. Rex Edward Ballinger
Value
A $2,000 scholarship will be awarded annually to a student through at least the 2015 - 2016 Academic School Year.

applications submitted after March 1 might not be considered.
Renewal criteria
This scholarship is renewed automatically. To receive automatic renewal the student must continue to meet all criteria.
Selection criteria
In order to be eligible for this scholarship, the student must:
- Be an undergraduate student seeking a Bachelors of Science in Education in Spanish
- Intend to seek certification as a teacher and intend to teach Spanish
- Maintain a departmental GPA of 3.5
Anna L. Blair Scholarship

Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in a foreign language
Preference given to United States citizens. Consideration will be made based on first academic excellence and second financial need.
Ballinger-Colon-Compton Award Scholarship

Amount varies year to year based on availability of funds. Typically $500 - $800.

Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time sophomore or junior majoring in Spanish
- Have an overall GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.5 in Spanish
- Demonstrate Spanish proficiency
First priority to a junior pursuing a teaching degree that has submitted a proposal for study or travel in a Spanish-speaking country. Second priority to a sophomore that has submitted a proposal for study or travel in a Spanish-speaking country. Awards made with regard to financial need.
D. Virginia Thomas Memorial Scholarship
Value
Amount varies year to year based on availability of funds. However, this fund is not yet available for awarding.

Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time student majoring in Spanish.
- Be traveling as part of an exchange program to Guanajuato, Mexico.
First priority will be given to juniors who plan to teach Spanish. Consideration also given based on Spanish GPA. Award will be made with regard to financial need.
Madeleine Hooper Travel Fund Scholarships

Selection criteria
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in a European Language or Chinese
- Have maintained an overall GPA of 2.5 and a departmental GPA of 3.0
- Demonstrate a curiosity and adaptability to other cultures through previous international travel experience
- Submit a letter of recommendation from a professional that can attest to your international travel experience and experience interacting with other cultures
- Demonstrate leadership through appropriate departmental activities as well as activities associated with your major area of study
Preference will be given for students majoring in French.
The Pauline Nugent CCVI Scholarship Fund

- Be a full-time sophomore or greater majoring in Hebrew or Classical Language
William and June Ross Holman Cultural Study Abroad Award

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be an undergraduate student seeking a degree in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages
- Have no previous international travel experiences
- Have maintained an overall GPA of 2.5 and a GPA of 3.0 in their major language
- Be enrolled in at least 12 hours the semester preceding travel
- Be traveling to a foreign country for an internship or to pursue a study program
Financial need is considered.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time sophomore or junior majoring or minoring in French
- Have demonstrated proficiency in French
- Have an overall GPA of 3.0 and a departmental GPA of 3.4.
First priority to French majors pursuing a teaching degree with a desire to travel to study French culture. Second priority to a student majoring or minoring in French with a desire to travel to study French Culture. Third priority to a student majoring or minoring in French. Awards made with regard for financial need.
Wanda Gorczynski Latin Scholarship
