Emergency Quick Reference Guide

Evacuation

  1. Remain calm.
  2. Do not use elevators.
  3. Walk to evacuation destination area (or other location if instructed otherwise) and tell others to do the same.
  4. Offer to help those who need assistance.
  5. Once outside stay about 500 feet away from the building.
  6. Do not return to the building until an all clear is given.

Fire

  1. Remain calm.
  2. Call 9-1-1 to report the fire.
  3. Do not use elevators.
  4. Immediately evacuate.
  5. Offer to help those who need assistance.
  6. Use building exits to go to evacuation destination (or other location if instructed otherwise).
  7. Do not return to the building until instructed to do so.

Earthquake

  1. Remain calm.
  2. Seek shelter in a doorway or under a heavy table.
  3. Do not use elevators.
  4. After shaking stops, evacuate the building, avoiding power lines.
  5. Call 9-1-1 to report injury or damage.
  6. Offer to help those who need assistance.
  7. Go to evacuation destination area (or other location if instructed otherwise).
  8. Do not return to the building until instructed to do so.

Active shooter/hostile assailant

  1. Remain calm.
  2. Call 9-1-1 when safe to do so, and while or after you take the following actions:
    1. RUN - If you can exit the area safely, do so.  Help others to exit as well.
    2. HIDE - If you cannot exit the area, take cover and lock or barricade the doors.  Silence phones.  Turn off lights.  Cover interior windows if safe to do so.
    3. FIGHT - If discovered, fight back.  Work together with others to defeat the intruder.

Tornado

  1. Remain calm.
  2. Do not use elevators.
  3. Go to the designated shelter location.  If unsure, seek shelter in the lowest level of a building and stay away from windows.
  4. Offer to help those who need assistance.
  5. After tornado has passed, call 9-1-1 to report injury or damage; evacuate the building if necessary.
  6. Do not leave the building/shelter area until an all clear is given or the warning has expired.

Medical or other emergency

  1. Remain calm.
  2. Call 9-1-1 and report the following:
    • Incident type
    • Incident location
    • Description of the incident
  3. For injury/illness:
    • Keep victim still
    • Check breathing
    • Control bleeding
  4. For cardiac or respiratory arrest, obtain closest automated external defibrillator (AED) and follow training and/or directions.

Civil unrest

  1. Maintain situational awareness through social and other media.
  2. If you are not in the area, do not go to the area.
  3. If you are near the area, leave as quickly as possible.
  4. If you are caught in a crowd, stay neutral, go with the flow and move toward the edge at an angle to get away.
  5. Comply with all law enforcement directives.
  6. If you are in a vehicle, lock doors, roll up windows and get away before the crowd surrounds it; however, avoid using the vehicle to push through the crowd.
  7. If you are the target of the aggression, such as having bottles and rocks thrown while you are in your vehicle, you need to get away immediately and call 9-1-1.
