She's defined herself as a #CitizenEmpowerer

Alexis Creamer is not only leading on campus. She’s leading around the nation.

In 2017, Creamer was appointed as a youth-member trustee of America’s Promise Alliance, the nation’s largest network dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth.

She is one of just about 40 trustees chosen from around the nation.

She holds that role until 2019, and has traveled to Washington, D.C., in that capacity.

Joining clubs, finding internships

Growing up in a household with a disabled, single parent, Creamer never thought she would be able to go to college.

“My favorite thing about being a student here is the opportunity to really define who you are. Now I know I want to go to people who are struggling and inspire them the way I have been inspired here.”

“I come from an economically disadvantaged background. My mother is deaf and has a learning disability, and I was brought up in a single-parent household.

“I was saved by this program called Wyman Teen Leadership.

“It’s a nonprofit that caters to economically disadvantaged youth and gives us the skills to succeed. They offer a full-ride scholarship to Missouri State University. I got the scholarship.”

Her academic journey wasn’t always smooth, but she found MSU resources that helped her.

“I think Missouri State really taught me that you’re going to find your place; you’re going to succeed. There are going to be people on campus that help support you.”

Now, she has joined the MSU recruitment council for diversity, and the local chapter of the NAACP.

She also works with the Black Bear, an online publication that focuses on the MSU African-American community. She also had a one-year term as vice president of Untamed Tongues, a poetry performance club.

Creamer has had several media-related internships, including one at a local TV station. She found that internship through the MSU College of Business career fair.

She even went to Portugal for a short-term study-away trip.

“You can really find people here who can help you in so many areas. I’ve been able to collaborate with people I never even thought I would meet.”

Giving back to her community

In her spare time, Creamer hosts empowerment workshops for girls at a high school near MSU.

She is developing an art program to encourage girls to be confident and culturally aware.

After graduating, she hopes to continue working with nonprofits.

“I’m really big on artistic expression and helping people find their voice.”
