Op11.08-3 Snow Removal Policy

A. Notice

When snow is one inch deep and accumulating, or icing conditions are present, a Campus Safety Specialist shall notify the Assistant Director of Facilities Management, Grounds.

  • The Assistant Director of Facilities Management, Grounds will make an assessment where removal will be required and, if necessary, contact the snow removal contractor and Grounds employees.
  • The Assistant Director of Facilities Management, Grounds will notify the Assistant Director of Facilities Management, Custodial of the need to clear and treat assigned areas.

B. Coordination

The Assistant Director of Facilities Management, Grounds will coordinate the activities of the grounds personnel and the snow removal contractor in their execution of the removal of snow and ice from parking lots, internal campus walkways and street snow routes. The Assistant Director of Facilities Management, Grounds is to follow the priorities for clearing parking lots and street routes as noted in the Snow Removal Procedures and Priorities approved by the University Engineer and Director of Facilities Management; however, discretion must be exercised depending on the accumulation of snow, the status of classes and other scheduled campus events. The University Engineer and Director of Facilities Management will be consulted regarding the basic plan of execution.

Communication Assistance:

The University Engineer and Director of Facilities Management will determine when Work Management is to be called in to help coordinate the effort.

Upon the forecast for accumulation of snow greater than 1” or more, notice (in the form of announcements and posted notices) is to be given to the respective hall/school for vehicles to be removed from any necessary locations. Facilities Management, University Safety, Residence Life, Housing and Dining Services, and Greenwood Laboratory School will coordinate the implementation of the action. University Safety will take the lead to notify the appropriate parties for vacating the drives.

Following initial notification, University Safety will barricade the entry to each U-drive.

Eight hours following notification, vehicles remaining in the U-drive are subject to towing to another, more accessible lot on campus

C. Assistance from all custodial crews

All Missouri State custodial crews are to clean their respective building steps, accessible ramps and walks free of snow and ice from the doors to the main walk for all entrances and exits. Crews should be called in if there is an accumulation of 1 inch or more. The crews are expected to maintain these areas beyond the initial snow days, if necessary.

Grounds Services will make ice melt chemicals available to all custodial crews.

D. Accessible routes

The accessible routes will be given priority for clearing; a campus map highlighting these routes is available from Facilities Management.

The accessible routes, ramps, and various curb cuts shall be cleared adjacent to the residence hall areas first, then adjacent to the main academic campus second.
