GENERAL FUNCTION

The Executive Director, International Partnerships leads the development and management of international university partnerships, student recruitment strategy, and implementation of customized education programs for international partner institutions. This position serves on the core leadership team to set strategy and direction for MSU International Programs and serves on the International Leadership and Training Center management team.

The Executive Director, International Partnerships works with partner institutions, negotiates and maintains agreements with international university partners and coordinates the development and implementation of joint academic programs between MSU and international partner universities. The Executive Director, International Partnerships oversees the management and operations of all MSU China Programs, and advises and assists Chinese students and visiting scholars at MSU.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Master’s degree in a related field is required. An equivalent combination of years of experience and education may be considered for substitution of educational requirements. 

Experience: Three years of experience working with international universities is required, with a preference for experience collaborating with universities in Asia, Africa or South America. Experience working with foreign nationals studying in the United States is required, with a preference for experience working with students from China, Vietnam or India.

Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required; excellent interpersonal skills are required.  Knowledge of the culture and customs of a variety of countries is required, particularly U.S. and China. Knowledge of recruitment and admission procedures and policies regarding international students is required; Management skills in the selection and supervision of employees and budgeting are preferred. Computer literacy is required, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and the use of the internet. Strong writing and editing skills are required. Problem solving skills are required.  Strong presentation and communication skills are required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

Language:  Written and spoken fluency in Mandarin Chinese is preferred.

Other: The scope of the job occasionally requires evening and weekend work. Occasional overseas travel is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Directs operations of the Office of China Programs to maintain current Chinese university partnerships, explore new partnerships, and develop effective student recruitment strategies.

2. Advises and assists Chinese students and visiting scholars by providing academic and cultural support and helping students and scholars access needed resources.

3. Coordinates management of MSU China Programs, including the LNU-MSU College of International Business in Dalian and the SWU-MSU Dual Degree in Plant Science program in Chongqing.

4. Serves as a member of the International Leadership and Training Center (ILTC) management team, with lead responsibility for implementation of customized academic programs for international partner institutions.

5. Provides leadership, management, and support for the university’s international partnerships strategy by developing a competent, effective staff of administrative, professional, student, and clerical support personnel.

6. Oversees and facilitates the process of developing international partnership agreements and maintains updated database and records of all international partnership agreements.

7. Leads the process to set program goals and measurable outcomes for international partnerships and serves as budgetary approver for associated programs.

8. Facilitates student and faculty exchange and interaction with international partner institutions.

9. Participates in MSU international enrollment strategy development and leads implementation of international partnership enrollment initiatives, with responsibility for student recruitment, admissions, and registration.

10. Serves as an advisor to international student organizations.

11. Works to resolve enrollment, registration, academic, cultural, and housing issues that arise with international partner university students studying at MSU.

12. Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

13. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required by the Vice President for Community and Global Partnerships.

14. Supports the overall success of MSU International Programs by performing all other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION

The Executive Director, International Partnerships supervises at least two full-staff and several part-time staff, graduate assistants, and student employees.
