Campus activities: Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship; Student Orientation, Advisement and Registration (SOAR) leader; resident assistant in Wells House
Career goals: Plans to stay at Missouri State to earn master’s degree, then work as public relations professional for nonprofit youth organization or church
You’re in your first year on campus. How did you make friends when you
came to college? I met people in the classroom, in student organizations, in my residence hall and just going through my day. I will strike up a conversation anywhere with anyone — I met my best friends on the Bear Line (campus shuttle system)! The relationships I have made have been the best part of my first year.
What is your advice to incoming freshmen? Remember all the people in your class are also freshmen, so they are just as nervous as you even if they are hiding it. Just talk to them and you will start making friends who will make your college experience incredible. Reach out — it makes everything better. Expand outside the people you know from high school and embrace University life.
What would you tell potential students about Missouri State’s
public affairs mission? I love the mission because it sets us apart. Missouri State’s focus is developing engaged students; we learn that if we want to see society change it is up to us. The mission is more than banners hanging around campus. We use it in classes, social groups and all we do — for example, our professors have us watch or read the news to be informed and aware. We’re encouraged to volunteer, be accepting of other cultures and take initiative when we see something wrong.
How do your teachers help you succeed? My professors all genuinely care and are willing to help. They are looking for students they can mentor.
What is your favorite place to study? The library has an atmosphere built for learning because there are no distractions. It’s like work just happens on its own when you’re there!
You are a resident assistant in Wells House. What do you like about the hall? I have to represent for Wells! It’s a great place. The staff is amazing and the rooms are nice because the building has had some work done. It’s the oldest hall, so it has a lot of history.
What do you and your friends do for fun on campus? We play racquetball three to four times a week at Hammons Student Center. We also hang out in our rooms in the residence halls.
What do you like to do in Springfield? My friends and I hit up Orange Leaf (self-serve frozen yogurt) or go to the Palace Theatre for cheap movies. I also go to hockey games at Jordan Valley Ice Park.
Do you think Missouri State is a good value? It is a great value. I was able to get a Multicultural Leadership Scholarship that helps pay for school. I have friends at other schools and when we compare notes I know without a doubt I am getting such a good education for the price.
