Bachelor of Science

Major requirements (39 hours):

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science* in Modern Language (non-comprehensive) complete 33 hours of coursework in a single modern language and a minor. This flexible structure enables students to achieve advanced proficiency in at least one modern language, to understand the cultural factors that affect how members of other language communities view the world and express themselves, to analyze and interpret target-language texts and other cultural products, and to apply those skills and insights in a variety of professional and academic settings.

  1. MCL 100(3) or IDS 297(3).
  2. 33 hours in coursework beyond the 103 level in a single modern language, as approved by an advisor (language courses at the 101, 102, and 103 level may not be counted toward this major).
  3. The 33-hour requirement must include at least one upper division literature course and one upper division culture or history course of the single Modern Language as approved by an advisor.
  4. Public Affairs Capstone Experience: MCL 495(3).
  5. Minor required (or second major). A minor chosen from within the Department of Languages, Cultures and Religions must be in a different language than the major.

* Students who wish to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree in a language may pursue an individualized major.

Modern Language (Comprehensive)

Bachelor of Science

Major requirements (61-77 hours):

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science1 in Modern Language complete 33 hours of coursework in a single modern language and an option relating to that language. This flexible structure enables students to achieve advanced proficiency in at least one modern language, to understand the cultural factors that affect how members of other language communities view the world and express themselves, to analyze and interpret target-language texts and other cultural products, and to apply those skills and insights in a variety of professional and academic settings.

Major core (39 hours):
  1. MCL 100(3) or IDS 297(3).
  2. 33 hours in coursework beyond the 103 level in a single modern language, as approved by an advisor (language courses at the 101, 102 and 103 level may not be counted toward this major.)2
  3. The 33-hour requirement must include at least on upper division literature course and one upper division culture or history course of the single Modern Language as approved by an advisor.
  4. Public Affairs Capstone Experience: MCL 495(3).
Complete one of the following options:
Second Language option (24 hours):
  1. Complete 24 hours in a second modern language or complete 12 hours beyond the 103 level in a second modern language and 12 hours in coursework related to that language or language family, as approved by an advisor.
Translation option (22 hours):
  1. ACC 201(3) or MGT 340(3) or MKT 350(3); COM 260(3); ENG 221(3) or ENG 321(3); ENG 296(3); MCL 310(3); MCL 410(1).
  2. CHI 410(3) and 415(3); or FRN 410(3) and 415(3); or GRM 410(3) and 415(3); or SPN 410(3) and 415(3). These courses will also count towards the 33 credit hours in coursework in a single Modern Language.
Applied Business option (24 hours):
  1. BUS 135(3) and MGT 340(3).
  2. CHI 410(3) and 415(3); or FRN 410(3) and 415(3); or GRM 410(3) and 415(3); or SPN 410(3) and 415(3). These courses will also count towards the 33 credit hours in coursework in a single Modern Language.
  3. 12 hours of coursework related to a single business focus, industry, or profession, subject to approval from the Office of the Dean of the College of Business.3
Teacher Certification option (38 hours):
  1. A combined (Missouri State and transfer) GPA of 2.75 or higher for admission to Teacher Education.
  2. A combined (Missouri State and transfer) GPA of 3.00 or higher for Supervised Teaching.
  3. Complete the Professional Education Courses and Competencies, including the Teaching Methods (MCL 413 and MCL 414) and Supervised Teaching (MCL 493 and 496) courses, and all other applicable certification requirements. Refer to Teacher Education for requirements.

Notes:

1 Students who wish to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in a language should review the Individualized Major website. This option may be more attractive for students considering graduate studies or whose goals are better served by a Bachelor of Arts degree. Students should contact the Academic Advising and Transfer Center for detailed information and procedures early in their junior year.

2 If a student pursues a minor in the Department of Languages, Cultures and Religions it must be in a different language than the major.

3 Prerequisites may apply. Students may not apply more than 24 credit hours of College of Business coursework toward this option.

Accelerated graduate program in Applied Second Language Acquisition

Eligible Missouri State undergraduate students in the Department of Languages, Cultures and Religions may apply for admission to the Applied Second Language Acquisition program and begin taking graduate course work as they complete the work for a bachelor’s degree. A maximum of 9 hours of graduate credit may be counted toward both the undergraduate and graduate degree (Mixed Credit). Refer to the Graduate Catalog for specific admission requirements.
