String Fling

String Fling is a chamber music/orchestra experience for pre-college string students. Marking its sixteenth year, String Fling returns in 2017 with high school (July 16-19) and middle school (July 19-21) camps. Students in private lessons who have completed grade 6 or higher are invited to study this summer on the Missouri State University campus (Springfield, Missouri).

Faculty

Students will be coached by full-time faculty of Missouri State University's Department of Music, including Dr. David Hays, Dr. Amy Muchnick, Dr. Michael A. Murray, Dr. Christopher Kelts, along with guest faculty instruction. Convocations, master classes, presentations and and other events combine to make String Fling an unforgettable experience.

Housing and Meals

Students will live on campus in a University residence hall for the duration of the program; they will also be served three meals daily from one of the residential dining halls. A staff of counselors supervise residential life. ALL camp students will be supervised at all times.

High School
String Fling Chamber Camp

July 16-19, 2017

The High School camp is a chamber music experience! Participants range from completed 9th thru completed 12th grade and are placed in small ensembles, according to their respective abilities, to work with coaches and perform in master classes, culminating in a performance.

Daily Schedule

This camp runs Sunday, July 16 thru Wednesday, July 19, 2017. More detailed schedule information will be mailed to campers with sheet music.

(Sunday) July 16:

  • Afternoon arrival to Missouri State campus
  • Introductions and initial rehearsals

(Monday - Wednesday) July 17-19:

  • 8 - 9 a.m. — Breakfast and personal practice time
  • 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. — Rehearsals / Lunch / Assembly / Masterclass
  • 5 - 8 p.m. — Dinner / Evening Activites / Orchestra
  • Wednesday:
    • 6 p.m. — Concert

Students interested in attending should apply by June 3, 2017.

  1. Complete the online application and fee.
    • High School camp tuition is $350 (includes a $25 non-refundable application fee)
  2. Prepare and publish an audition video:
    • Keep video brief, no longer than 3 minutes.
    • No accompanist is required.
    • Publish audition video as an unlisted video on your YouTube or Vimeo channel.
  3. Email a link to your audition video to StringFling@MissouriState.edu. Please include your full name as it was submitted on the application.

Middle School
Silver Strings Orchestra Camp

July 19-21, 2017

The Silver Strings Middle School camp is open to students who have completed 6th, 7th, or 8th grade. Participants will gain a fun and educating orchestral experience culminating in a performance. ALL camp students will be supervised by resident assistants and have supervision at all times.

This camp runs Wednesday, July 19 thru Friday, July 21, 2017. More detailed schedule information will be mailed to campers with sheet music.

(Wednesday) July 19:

  • Early evening arrival to Missouri State campus
  • Introductions, attend chamber concert/seating auditions

(Thursday & Friday) July 20-21:

  • 8 a.m. — Breakfast and warm up time
  • 9 a.m. — Orchestra rehearsal
  • 11 a.m. — Activity/lunch
  • 1 p.m. — Orchestra rehearsal
  • 3 p.m. — Afternoon activity
  • 4 p.m. — Sectionals/presentations
  • 5 p.m. — Dinner
  • Thursday:
    • 6 p.m. — Orchestra rehearsal
    • 8 p.m. — Evening activity
  • Friday:
    • 6 p.m. — Concert

Suzuki Violin Book 1 Day Camp

Attention violin students! If you are in Suzuki Book One, between the ages of 5-10 and have polished the pieces at least through Song of the Wind, we would love to have you join us for three mornings of group fun at the Missouri State University String Fling! We will meet from 8:30-11:30, Monday-Wednesday, with a performance on the String Fling final concert Wednesday evening. Parent attendance during the camp is mandatory, and participants will receive a snack each day, along with a String Fling t-shirt. Enrollment is limited to 15 students. Tuition is $125 plus a $25 application fee.

String Fling Junior Day Camp

Attention all viola, cello and other violin students ages 5-12, if you have learned at least two scales and three pieces, we would love to have you join us for three mornings of group fun at the Missouri State University String Fling! We will meet from 8:30-11:30, Monday-Wednesday, with a performance on the String Fling final concert Wednesday evening. Parent attendance during the camp is mandatory, and participants will receive a snack each day, along with a String Fling t-shirt. You will be coached by Missouri State University string faculty and our String Fling associates on solo and ensemble skills. Please email StringFling@MissouriState.edu with any questions.

Tuition is $125 plus a $25 application fee.

Reminder: With these day camps a parent or guardian must attend with pupils at all times.
