Scholarship Opportunities for Full-Time Students of the
Department of Music
2008-2009

Awards are contingent upon availability of funds and market value of investments. Items denoted with an * will be determined by faculty members in the designated areas; items not denoted with * require an audition before the Music Faculty Scholarship Committee.

The stated grade level requirement is the student’s college level in fall, 2009. The stated GPA’s are those for college classes and therefore pertain only to sophomores (or higher). The "standard considerations" for freshmen are high school performance, college potential (as assessed by aptitude tests), and leadership qualities.

PERFORMANCE AWARDS (16)*

$2000/year awarded to 16 students on the basis of audition and promise for success in the student’s performance area awarded by band, choral, orchestra and piano areas; renewable, provided contract requirements are met

TALENT AWARDS*

$200-$2000/year-awards based on audition by keyboard and orchestra areas; renewable, provided contract requirements are met

BAND GRANTS*

Award amounts vary; available to students selected to perform in the Pride Marching Band.; renewable, provided contract requirements are met

CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPS*

Award amounts vary; available to students selected to perform in an assigned choral ensemble; renewable, provided contract requirements are met

VOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS*

$50-$500/yr each, set aside for freshman vocal music majors with outstanding auditions; non-renewable

WILFRED ADLER PIANO SCHOLARSHIP*

Music major with excellent potential for being a piano teacher or performer; overall 2.5 GPA and 3.0 GPA in music required of sophomores or higher; may be awarded to a freshman, using standard considerations

MEL BAY AWARD*

Outstanding guitar student majoring in music; GPA of 2.5 overall and/or GPA of 2.5 in music classes

DAVID CAUDLE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP*

Organ student enrolled in applied lessons; 2.5 GPA if music major or 2.0 if non-music major

TOM CHANEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR GRADUATES OF CLEVER HIGH SCHOOL

Graduate of Clever High School, incoming freshman at Missouri State, enrolled in a music class; first preference will be given to music education or performance major; determined by audition

TOM CHANEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR MUSIC MAJORS

Music Education or Music Performance major enrolled at Missouri State; first preference will be given to a former (or current) recipient of the Tom Chaney Memorial Scholarship for Graduates of Clever High School; overall GPA of 3.0 required; determined by audition

PETER COLLINS PIANO SCHOLARSHIP*

Sophomore or higher piano major; 2.5 GPA cumulative; 3.0 GPA in the major

ROBERT CLINTON COPE III-PHI MU ALPHA SINFONIA SCHOLARSHIP

Student with a 3.0 cumulative GPA; must have enrolled in a music class or have participated in a musical ensemble or other musical organization at Missouri State; determined by audition and recommendation of the local chapter of Phi Mu; not renewable

DAWIN EMANUEL VOCAL SCHOLARSHIP*

Vocal music major, sophomore level with a 2.5 cumulative GPA; as determined by audition

HORATIO AND LYNNE FARRAR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS (2)

Outstanding music majors with financial need, as selected by audition; may be awarded to freshmen, with standard considerations; automatically renewable, provided satisfactory academic progress is maintained (not offered in years held by continuing students)

LESLIE R. FITE BRASS/WOODWIND SCHOLARSHIPS (2)

Music majors with a 2.5 cumulative GPA, as selected by brass and/or woodwind audition

FITE CONCERT BAND SCHOLARSHIPS*

Outstanding band students; varying awards and amounts

LOWELL K. FLEENOR MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP

Music major; with preference to a string player, who is a graduate of the following high schools (in priority order): West Plains High School, Houston High School, and Salem High School; overall GPA of 3.0 is required; may be awarded to a freshman with standard considerations; determined by audition

FRIENDS OF MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP

Outstanding junior music major as selected by audition

BOB AND VIRGINIA HERB VOICE SCHOLARSHIP*

Vocal music major at the sophomore level or higher; must have 2.5 GPA and exhibit excellence in the area of voice by audition

HENRIETTA KELLER MUSIC EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP

Graduate (or undergraduate) student, who has been admitted to the Master of Music (or Bachelor of Music Education) programs at Missouri State, with first preference to a graduate student; (if additional funds are available after making a graduate student award, an additional award may be made to an undergraduate student); 3.0 GPA required of graduate students; 2.5 GPA required of undergraduates

KIEFER-YOUNG MEMORIAL KEYBOARD SCHOLARSHIPS (3)*

Talented keyboard majors (2 piano, 1 organ) registered for 15 hours each semester; automatically renewed so long as student maintains satisfactory progress

GEORGE H. KLINKERFUSS SCHOLARSHIP*

Freshman music major, string player, renewable annually 3 times provided student continues to make satisfactory academic and musical progress; (should the student not achieve that, a different student may be selected for the balance of the 4 years); not awarded in years held by continuing student; consideration to musical aptitude as determined by string faculty

EMIL AND DORIS C. LORZ SCHOLARSHIP*

Junior or senior vocal music major who plans to pursue a career in opera; must have 3.5 overall GPA and enroll in at least 15 hours each semester; as determined by audition; preference for female; must have completed coursework in theatre and foreign language

NORMA AND TOM MCCLELLAN MUSIC EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP*

Junior or senior music education-vocal major, overall GPA of 3.0; if awarded to a junior, may be renewed automatically for a second (and third) year as long as the student maintains satisfactory academic progress; as determined by audition

DAUCEY HILL MARTIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP*

Outstanding sophomore piano major selected by the piano faculty

JANE A MEYER ORGAN SCHOLARSHIP*

Music major who is at least at sophomore level and studies organ as a secondary area of music performance; must have overall 2.5 GPA; not renewable; adequate keyboard skills, as determined by keyboard faculty

WAYNE AND MELBA MILLER BAND SCHOLARSHIP*

Outstanding band student; automatically renewable as long as student maintains satisfactory academic progress; may be awarded to a freshman with standard considerations

DR. MOLLIE AUTRY MOLNAR SCHOLARSHIP

Music major, at least sophomore level, recommended by a music faculty member, with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. As selected by audition on the basis of scholarship, musicianship and leadership; automatically renewable as long as student maintains satisfactory academic progress

LOUIS Y. & FRANCES MUCHNICK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP*

Music major in string performance with a 3.0 GPA ; (renewable, but must reapply and audition each year); may be awarded to a freshman after audition with the string faculty

MARVIN AND MARIE MURPHREE VOICE SCHOLARSHIP*

Vocal music major, at least at sophomore level with excellence in vocal area as determined by audition

NAPIER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

Need-based award; alternates between musical theatre major and violin or cello performance major; 2.5 GPA required; renewable; audition required, (not awarded on years held by continuing student); may be awarded to a freshman with standard considerations

OPERA WORKSHOP SCHOLARSHIPS*

Opera Workshop students, as selected by audition

ROSE MARY OWENS SINGING SCHOLARSHIP*

Senior level student based on outstanding solo singing for music department events. Preference will be given to a soprano, and to a person interested in pursuing a career in opera; Need-based

JOHN AND KAREN PRESCOTT COMPOSITION SCHOLARSHIP

Music major who will enroll in a composition course at Missouri State; (awarded on the basis of an original score, which is to be submitted to scholarship committee for review and performed at the Departmental Scholarship Audition.); 2.5 GPA required; may be awarded to a freshman with standard considerations

PRESSER FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

$4200/year cash award to an outstanding senior music major as selected by audition

GARLAND AND LAVELLA REYNOLDS ENDOWMENT FUND-MUSIC

Full-time undergraduate or graduate music student; 2.75 GPA required, if graduate student, 3.5 GPA required; may be awarded to a freshman with standard considerations; as determined by audition

N. MEREDITH RICH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Based on financial need; for a music major who has completed 54 semester hours, has a minimum 3.0 GPA, is involved in campus/community activities, displays leadership, and shows a strong interest in pursuing a career in music or teaching in a field related to music; as determined by audition; not renewable

SCHUPBACH VOICE SCHOLARSHIP*

Music major; at least at sophomore level, 3.0 GPA, excellence in area of voice as determined by audition

ROBERT AND ALICE SCOTT SCHOLARSHIP*

Graduate student enrolled in the Master of Music program who has selected Conducting or Music Education as the area of concentration, with preference to those who are pursuing careers as instrumental music educators; may be renewed once, provided student is still eligible

ALBERT VERWEIRE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP*

Outstanding senior music major with flute as the major instrument; overall GPA of 2.5 and/or music GPA of 2.5 required

MARGARET CORBIN VOGEL VOICE SCHOLARSHIP*

Vocal music major as selected by audition; 2.5 GPA; may be awarded to a freshman with standard considerations

GUY AND BARBARA WEBB CHORAL SCHOLARSHIP

Junior vocal Music Ed major, 3.0 GPA; in one of the auditioned Missouri State choral groups; must exhibit strong command of vocal techniques, as determined by audition

RICHARD P. WELLOCK SCHOLARSHIP

Based on financial need and awarded to a talented music major as determined by audition; 2.5 GPA and leadership qualities required; may be awarded to a freshman with standard considerations

WILLIAM T. WHITE STRING SCHOLARSHIPS (4)*

Outstanding string music major as determined by audition; may be undergraduate or graduate student; 2.5 GPA, if undergrad; 3.0 if grad

MARIA CONTENT WISE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS (2)*

Students who demonstrate good piano skills. Preference given to non-music majors who have studied piano previously; renewed automatically so long as the student maintains satisfactory academic progress and continues improvement of piano skills
