About the Family Association

The mission of the Missouri State Family Association is to provide parents and family members an opportunity to play an active supporting role in the education of their student, to provide forum for fellowship and networking with other parents, and to further the educational goal of Missouri State University by improving communication between parents and the University community.

The Family Association provides parents and family members of Missouri State students with several great services.

  • We inform members about Missouri State programs, services, and events through our Family Connection blog, our webpage, our Facebook page, special emails, and other communication channels.
  • We invite members to attend special parent and family events such as our annual Family Weekend.
  • We provide opportunities to participate in Missouri State programs, assume leadership roles, and support important Missouri State Family Association initiatives.
  • We help serve as a first point of contact for parents and family members, help them answer questions, and direct them to appropriate departments and resources for further assistance.

Joe Morris

Joe is the director of Student Orientation, Advisement, and Registration (SOAR) and coordinator of the Family Association. He has a long history at Missouri State University. As a student he earned a bachelor of science degree in Mass Media and master of arts degree in Communication.  He has experience in advising undecided honors students in the Honors College and teaching several sections of freshman orientation courses and student leadership courses

As an alumnus of the University, Joe knows exactly what opportunities for growth Missouri State offers. He enjoys challenging students to grow and supporting them through this process. He welcomes the opportunity to partner with students' family members throughout their time at the University.

Erica Garnett

Erica is the graduate assistant for the Family Association. She develops articles for the Family Connection blog, updates the Family Association’s Facebook page, sends email messages to FA members, and coordinates programming for our annual Family Weekend. Additionally, she develops and moderates sessions for SOAR's family orientation program.

Erica is a recent graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and Social Policy. She is currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education and plans to graduate in May 2014.

Although moving to Springfield from the Chicagoland area was quite a change for her, she fell in love with the campus and the community after my first visit during the spring of 2012.  She believes the small-town-feel of Springfield provides an excellent atmosphere for learning and development.
