Welcome to the College of Humanities and Public Affairs at Missouri State University.
Humanities and Public Affairs is one of the six academic colleges at Missouri State University with nearly 1300 majors among eight departments. Our 100 full-time faculty members teach a sizeable number of courses in the University’s general education curriculum, and we offer programs leading to sixteen baccalaureate degrees and six Master’s degrees.
Most of the units in the College are housed in beautiful Strong Hall – the newest classroom building on campus. All classrooms in Strong Hall are equipped with the latest of instructional technology, and a very positive learning environment is provided to students. One department – the Department of Defense and Strategic Studies – was moved to the Washington, D.C. area in the summer of 2005 to take advantage of the teaching and research opportunities in national defense that are available only in our nation’s capital.
In keeping with the University’s public affairs mission, all students at Missouri State University are encouraged to become civically engaged. As a result, all programs in the College help to prepare students for the duties and responsibilities of citizenship and increase their ability to participate intelligently in public life, as well as pursue successful and satisfying careers in their chosen fields.
I invite you to browse our web site and learn more about the departments and research centers that make up our College. As you will find in the attached links, our College houses the traditional humanities and social science departments, as well as a number of interdisciplinary Area Studies Programs. In addition, several research centers operate as part of our mission, expanding opportunities for students to participate in applied research projects or to experience archaeological excavation and preservation techniques.
The faculty of the College of Humanities and Public Affairs is among the institution’s finest. We have many outstanding and award winning teachers, as well as a number of scholars with national or international reputations for their research expertise. All are involved in various forms of service to their campus, community, and disciplines.
This is an exciting time on our campus for students, as well as faculty and staff. There are many new and challenging initiatives underway in the College that continue to focus on producing educated persons and to better the state of Missouri and the larger society. I certainly am proud to be the Dean of this College.
