The five concert bands at Missouri State include the University Wind Ensemble, the Wind Symphony, the Symphonic Band, the Concert Band, and the University Community Band. Concert performances highlight an exciting array of literature and enable students to experience music-making at its best. The University Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band have performed often over the years for the Missouri Music Educators Conference. On campus, the groups perform at the Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts and the Wehr Band Hall.
The University Wind Ensemble is the premiere Wind group at Missouri State. Membership is extended to the most advanced musicians by audition. The band has a tradition of musical excellence and is committed to playing the finest new works along with the traditional masterpieces from the past. The Wind Ensemble membership is of like-minds and shares the highest ideals of musicianship. They are focused and scholarly. Members aspire to elevate individual and collective musicianship and strengthen performance skills. They are disciplined, motivated, and sincere about music.
The Wind Ensemble presents concerts on campus several times each semester and plays for the annual Pride Classic Concert Band Festival. In addition to their concert appearances, Dr. Prather and the University Wind Ensemble embrace a mission to advance the Wind Ensemble literature and they have created an aggressive venue in which eighteen new compositions for Wind Band have been premiered since 1995. The band has also performed for the Missouri Music Educators Association, the Missouri Bandmasters Conference and for the Southwest Regional Division of the College Band Directors National Association.
