Fall 2016 Concert Ensemble auditions
Auditions are held for all students who wish to perform in a concert ensemble during the fall semester (Wind Ensemble, University Symphony, and Wind Symphony). Descriptions for each ensemble are available on the respective ensemble page. Below, is the necessary information regarding audition times and audition material. Sign up sheets for audition times will be posted on the bulletin board outside Wehr 105 beginning August 1st. When signing up for an audition please include your full name, phone number, and an email address where you can be reached. All students must sign up for an audition time during the assigned instrument block. If you have a conflict (Pride rehearsal conflicts have already been approved) or have any questions regarding auditions, please email Dr. Zastoupil. We look forward to hearing you play!
Concert ensemble auditions will be divided into two “tiers.” Non-music majors interested in Wind Symphony only will audition on Tier 1 requirements, while music majors AND non-music majors interested in Wind Ensemble/University Symphony and Wind Symphony will audition on Tier 2 requirements.
Non-music major students interested in placement in Wind Symphony ONLY. Non-majors interested in placement in Wind Ensemble/University Symphony must audition on Tier 2 requirements below.
- ALL: Total time should be no more than 3 minutes. Please provide 2 copies of the etudes for the audition panel.
- Woodwinds and Brass: choose two contrasting etudes (one technical and one lyrical).
- Percussion: choose two solo works (concert literature or etudes). The two works must be for two different instrument types (for example snare and timpani, or snare and a mallet instrument, or a mallet instrument and timpani - NOT two mallet instruments.)
Music majors and non-music majors interested for placement in Wind Ensemble, University Symphony, and Wind Symphony. Excerpts for Tier 2 are available in PDF format below. Students should prepare all excerpts to the best of their ability. Listening to recordings for style and interpretation is encouraged!

The University Wind Ensemble is the premier wind band of the Missouri State University Department of Music. The University Wind Ensemble is composed of the finest wind, brass, and percussion music majors, as well as outstanding non-music majors, selected by audition. The MSU Wind Ensemble is guided by a philosophy seeking to expose its students and audiences to the highest quality repertoire written or transcribed for wind instruments. Repertory represents all styles of music from the Renaissance to world premieres for wind band. The University Wind Ensemble has appeared at regional College Band Directors National Association Conferences and numerous Missouri Music Educators Association Conferences. The Wind Ensemble is active in commissioning new music and promoting the growth of the wind band repertoire. Graduates from the Wind Ensemble hold distinguished teaching positions at the elementary, secondary, and collegiate levels. Former members of the ensemble also hold positions in orchestras around the world, as well as the leading military bands. The University Wind Ensemble typically performs two or three on-campus concerts per semester.

The Missouri State University Wind Symphony is comprised of advanced musicians (both music majors and non-music majors) by audition. The Wind Symphony is dedicated to broadening the artistic level and interest of its members while performing a wide array of repertoire including masterworks for band and contemporary wind literature. The Wind Symphony typically performs two or three on-campus concerts per semester.
Rehearsals: T/Th 2:00 -3:30p.m. and F 1:25-2:15p.m.

The Missouri State Concert Band is open to all University students. Concert Band offers a creative and positive music-making environment for students of all majors and academic disciplines within the University. Concert Band creates a comfortable venue for students to enjoy making music as a diversion to their academic schedule while performing the best of the wind band repertoire. The Concert Band performs three concerts during the spring semester only. No Audition required.

The University Community Band is a unique organization comprised of members from throughout the community presenting a minimum of four concerts a year in a variety of venues in the greater Springfield area.
