Citizen Scholars Update – Governor Beverly Miller Keltner provided an update from the Citizen Scholars Subcommittee. The committee received 17 applications for the citizen scholars award and discussion was had on revising criteria for the award. Recipients will be announced at the December meeting.

Student African American Brotherhood (SAAB) Presentation – Dr. Tyrone Bledsoe, founder and CEO of the Student African American Brotherhood (SAAB), and a panel of colleagues provided an overview of SAAB and the Brother 2 Brother program. Highlights of the presentation included SAAB moving operations from Toledo, Ohio to Missouri State University’s Springfield campus with the help of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.

Dr. Bledsoe shared that SAAB is a national leader in providing support systems for young men of color to start and complete a postsecondary education. SAAB’s model involves creating a positive peer community designed to increase high school and college graduation by young men of color. SAAB has over 200 institutional members and over 10,500 participants in 40 states. SAAB’s relocation to Springfield creates significant opportunity for Missouri State University and the other institutions in the Springfield area. The Board expressed their appreciation to SAAB and thanked Dr. Bledsoe and his team for the presentation.

Theatre and Dance Presentation – Dr. Frank Einhellig, Provost, and Dr. Joseph Price, Department Head of Theatre and Dance, provided a presentation on the Department of Theatre and Dance. Highlights of the report included the department having eight degree programs, increasingly competitive enrollment, and a national reputation. Throughout the year, the department puts on seven productions and engages in community outreach and education opportunities. The department features the historic tent theatre which has existed for 58 years. Dr. Price shared that the department is very excited about the work being done to fund and develop a tent pavilion which will house tent theatre in future years.

Adjournment – With no further business needing to be discussed, Ms. Silvey adjourned the Programs and Planning Committee meeting at 11:42 a.m. on the motion of Ms. Amy Counts, the second of Mr. Craig Frazier, and the unanimous approval of the committee.
