You Can Prevent Type 2 Diabetes
Join the Prevent T2 Program
What is Prevent T2?
Prevent T2 is a lifestyle intervention program created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in response to a 2002 study called the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). Participants with prediabetes who lost 5-7% of their body weight by making dietary changes and exercising 150 minutes per week reduced their risk of developing diabetes by 58%. To learn more about the National Diabetes Prevention Program, visit www.cdc.gov/diabetes/prevention.
How will the Employee Wellness Program be involved?
Sarah Bowman, the Magers Health and Wellness Center Diabetes Educator, will lead the one-year lifestyle intervention program here on campus. Our group will meet once per week for the first 4 months, 2 times per month for the following 4 months, and then once per month for the final 4 months. Participants will learn how to make healthy dietary changes and set reachable goals. They will be asked to record their weight and number of minutes they exercise at each meeting. Participants will be encouraged by peer support and a sense of community. Data will be collected and sent to the CDC. Magers Health and Wellness Center will become a CDC Recognized site for the National Diabetes Prevention Program and our data will be used in the ongoing study.
Who can participate?
Any MSU employees, retirees, spouses and dependents with an interest in diabetes, pre-diabetes or healthy lifestyle intervention may attend this program. Participants must join at the beginning of the program to attend any concurrent classes.
Be prepared to provide the following information at the first class:
- Most recent (within the last year) Fasting Blood Sugar or Hemoglobic A1c
When does it start?
The first meeting will be held September 12, 2018. We will meet at Magers Health and Wellness Center on Wednesdays from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. for the first 6 months and 1-2 times per month for the following 6 months.
How much does it cost?
Prevent T2 is provided at no cost for all participants! A diabetic-friendly lunch will also be served at the first meeting of each month.
